The Bennachie distillery was founded by William Smith in 1824 as the Jericho Distillery, although it is said there was an illicit still on the site much earlier than this. Later it was acquired by John Maitland. The distillery took its water from the Jordan burn. In... 1884, the Jericho distillery was expanded and three years later it was acquired by William Callander and John Graham. They changed the distillery’s name to Bennachie, for the Aberdeenshire mountain. The distillery shut its doors in 1913 and six years later it was purchased by Lawrence MacDonald Chalmers. Attempts were made to reopen the distillery, but, sadly, they failed. The name has now been used by United Brands, who founded the Bennachie Scotch Whisky Company Ltd in 1998. The Bennachie name is now used for a range of vatted malts.
