Glenfarclas 105 Winner's Running 21 Miles for Charity to Claim Prize!

by Master of Malt     24. April 2015 15:00

Charity Bee Suit Run

Sometimes, a great thing happens off the back of something else unexpectedly. When we gave you all the chance to win a very rare, not-available-for-sale, mahoosive 3 litre bottle of Glenfarclas 105 on 105 Day (by telling us why you deserved it most on Facebook or Twitter), we expected some great responses. What we didn't perhaps expect was the sheer number of entries, or that thanks to our winner's brilliant response we'd all now have a chance to help raise some money for a great cause.

Deserved winner Andrew Wheelhouse will be running from London (Orpington) to Tunbridge Wells - over 21 miles - on Saturday 2nd May to collect his prize and to raise money that will allow 16 Malawian children to attend secondary school for an entire year. He's not a seasoned runner either (he had to go out and buy trainers when he found out he'd won!) so this is one hell of an undertaking. In the words of our new favourite person:

Six New Master of Malt Single Cask Bottlings PLUS We Present Our New Glass Closures

by Master of Malt     22. April 2015 07:59

Master Of Malt Single Casks Glass Closures

So then. Single Cask bottlings, eh? Specifically our Single Cask bottlings. It's been a little while since we've bottled a load of delicious whisky for our Single Cask Series, but we're happy to announce not one, not two, not four, but six brand new Master of Malt Single Cask Series bottlings! This bunch includes a 23 year old Ardbeg(!), a 23 year old Invergordon single grain, a 17 year old Ben Nevis and two Bruichladdich single malts.

Exciting, yes? Of course it is. What's also very exciting is that we're releasing two independently bottled single cask whiskies with innovative glass closures, making cork-taint in single malt whiskies a thing of the past. (To be honest, it's a bit of an experiment - we'd love to know what you think but we'll get to that in a minute.)

Master of Cocktails - The Old Pal

by Ben Ellefsen     13. April 2015 10:10

Master of Cocktails The Old pal

Right then - everyone about ready for a #MasterofCocktails?

This evening we're going to make an oft-overlooked drink, the 'Old Pal'. The use of Dry vermouth lends this drink a light and very 'aperitiffy' (definitely not a word) character which makes it a wonderful springtime drink.

We're going to start off by summoning up the energy to get off the sofa and walk over to the bar.

Master of Cocktails - The Bobby Burns

Master of Cocktails The Bobby Burns

For #MasterofCocktails this week we made a twist on the Rob Roy (which I've decided on balance might be a rubbish drink). It's called a 'Bobby Burns' - and uses a healthy slug of Bénédictine to give the whisky and vermouth a much-needed lift.

It's obviously named after the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns, but in the week that Lynyrd Skynyrd's original drummer Bob Burns tragically died it seems a fitting tribute to him as well.

So, let's get to it...

St. Patrick's Day in Ireland with Jameson!

by Jake Mountain     27. March 2015 09:00

Hello Dublin Jameson St Patricks Day Live

It was 11am in Gatwick airport on Saturday 14th March. The plane taking a small drinks press contingent over to Ireland for Jameson's extended #HelloDublin St. Patrick's Day celebrations was due to leave in just over an hour from Heathrow. Had I made a terrible mistake?

In fact, I'd just arrived back from a holiday and had always known I couldn't make that flight, just as I now knew all I'd be seeing of blighty was Gatwick airport itself. My flight to Cork was later, and until then I'd simply be pretending I was Tom Hanks in The Terminal. (Although there were no Catherine Zeta-Jones love interest developments to speak of.)

The Lakes Distillery - A Delightful Weekend In The Country

by Jake Mountain     9. March 2015 12:00

The Lakes Distillery

"Are you a sponge or a stone? Do you like to experience all facets of life, or do you shut yourself off from new experience?"

With whisky distilleries opening right around the world, you must quite reasonably ask yourself questions such as this. We live in an age where a wide variety of excellent whiskies are being made outside of the traditional and well-established whisky producing counties, and if you're not open to them, you're missing out. In England, for example, the latest whisky distillery to come on stream is The Lakes Distillery near Cockermouth.

Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection

by Jake Mountain     6. March 2015 10:09

Glenlivet Nàdurra First Fill Selection whisky

A little while back I received a sample of Nàdurra First Fill Selection only to get all full of horrible cold when the time came to taste it. Hmph. After recovering from this particular malady, I then promptly succumbed to some kind of debilitating manflu straight away! (But that's another story, with another untasted sample staring at me throughout, goading me to get better. Or at least recover the sense of smell...)

Fortunately, between these two bouts of sub-optimum health (during which I was ejected from MoM towers as they rightly feared I'd infect the populous) I did at least manage to find some time to try this new Glenlivet! It's also now in stock and available to buy, so it seems like a good time to pop some thoughts on the ol' blog.

Find a Four-Leaf Clover And Win In Our St. Patrick's Day Competition!

by Sam Smith     4. March 2015 10:00

St Patrick's Day 2015 Irish Whiskey Tasting Set

If you take a glance up at the sky, you might notice that the rolling blanket of grey clouds that we’ve become acquainted with for the past 6 months is sometimes briefly replaced with a flaming ball of hot plasma. That fact that we can catch a glimpse of it means the cosmic grip of winter is waning and spring is on its way to thaw us out.

This also means that St. Patrick’s Day is almost upon us! To celebrate the Feast of Saint Patrick (and the fact that the Sun hasn't left us and ran off with some other planet like COROT-7b), we’re running a little competition which could result in you getting your hands on some fabulous Irish whiskey!

Master of Cocktails - Salted Caramel Old-Fashioned

by Ben Ellefsen     2. March 2015 09:17

Master of Cocktails Salted Caramel Old Fashioned

Right then, cocktail fans. For this week's #MasterofCocktails, we're going to be making a Salted Caramel Old-Fashioned recipe. Yum yum.

If you're planning on making along with this week's #MasterofCocktails, you're going to need to do a bit of prep a day or so in advance. This includes making the Salted Caramel, dissolving the sugar and salt (as well as fat-washing the whisky), filtering it and adding the bitters.

This will leave you with very little left to do when the time comes to actually serve your Salted Caramel Old-Fashioned, which is quite handy indeed.
