Master of Cocktails The De La Louisiane

Well hello there cocktail fans. Hope you all had a wonderful Burns Night (apostrophe?)! In celebration, for #MasterofCocktails on Sunday we made a De La Louisiane recipe, which is a... erm... a cocktail with American Whiskey.

Should've thought that one through a bit better really, eh?

Nevertheless - this really is a good 'un. It's sort of a halfway house between a Manhattan and a Vieux Carre.

On Sunday the 25th of January, folk around the world will be taking part in a Burns Supper to celebrate the life and work of Robert Burns, one of Scotland's most renowned and loved poets. Some might be very traditional, some less so, as Jake found out last year, but either way, these suppers are usually filled with three great pillars - poetry, haggis and Scotch whisky.

Basically, Burns Suppers are good fun and a great excuse (if you needed one) to enjoy some lovely whisky. If you've never been to one, keep reading to discover what you could be in for. If you're hosting one, good on ya!

Hellyers Road distillery

Born in Hampshire, England in 1790, Henry Hellyer trained as an architect and surveyor, and was one of the first officers to sign up for the Van Dieman’s Land Company shortly after it was formed in 1825.

Later to become Chief Surveyor and Chief Architect, his work in Tasmania made him legendary, so much so that after his resignation in 1832, the Court of Directors described his “unwearied exertions for the company... his personal privation and risk in exploring the country, and the admirable maps and plans.”

Master of Cocktails Spiced Pear Whiskey Sour

Right then ladies and gents. Trust everyone's recovered sufficiently after NYE? Time for this week's #MasterofCocktails. This week we're making a super-delicious Whiskey-Sour Variant recipe, which I have simply dubbed the Spiced Pear Whiskey Sour. We'll be using the St. George Spiced Pear Liqueur for this one. It really is god's own stuff, made using Pear Brandy, Pear Juice, and spices. Top, top marks St George Spirits.

I'm pairing (pearing? Sorry. Sorry) it with Woodford Reserve Kentucky Bourbon for its perfume. I think this works well with the spice.

The Lost Distilleries Blend

For those of you not blessed with omniscience or immortality, window 24 of Whisky Advent Calendar offers an exciting opportunity to taste some historic whiskies. And if you do happen to be omnipotent or immortal? Well it's still an opportunity to taste some jolly delicious whisky!

The Lost Distilleries Blend was named World's Best Blended Whisky 2014 at Whisky Magazine's World Whiskies Awards and does exactly what it says on the tin (or at least the bottle and handsome box). It's made up solely with whiskies from sadly now closed distilleries, many of whom have become legendary, with batch six containing malt from Port Ellen, Mosstowie, Caperdonich, Glenisla, Imperial, Glen Mhor and Brora, alongside grain from Port Dundas.

The number 23. No, not the 2007 Jim Carey movie that currently has a rating of 8% on Rotten Tomatoes (that'll learn him for playing The Grinch), nor the shirt number favoured by sportsballm'n Michael Jordan and Sir. David of Beckhenham. No, today the number 23 is all about the window we're opening on our Whisky Advent Calendars!

And behind that window you'll discover... The Macallan Amber! It's the second single malt in this Speyside distillery's 1824 Series of ex-Sherry cask matured non age statement whiskies. Each release in the range is named after its colour, the others being Gold, Sienna and Ruby. You may be thinking that Gold sounds more festive, but the dram in your hand is actually worth more than its weight in Gold. Ho ho oro!

Greetings all - time for this week's #MasterofCocktails. I'm very much aware that this one's sort of like the Christmas Number one, so we've got a really good one for you. It's a manhattan variant made with an *amazing* Single-Barrel Bourbon (props to Maverick Drinks' Michael Vachon on the cask selection), and Creme de Chataigne liqueur (Chestnut liqueur).

The name, you ask? Why, it's a Marronhattan, of course.

Mackinlay’s Shackleton Rare Old Highland Malt The Journey

Antarctica? Pah. They have land beneath their ice and snow, that's cheating. And all those penguins that a certain retailer seems to think have something to do with Christmas!? No, no, no. The Arctic, that's the place for me. Polar bears, reindeer, narwhals and Father Pugmas. North side massive.

In fact, it wasn't until Ranulph Fiennes popped by for tea a few years back that I gave much thought to the likes of Ernest Shackleton, who always seemed to have an unhealthy obsession with the wrong pole for my liking. Chose a great whisky for his men back in 1907 though did ol' Ernest, so I was delighted when Richard Paterson recreated it (twice) over one hundred years later! The Journey blended malt contains rare Glen Mhor (1980) and heavily-peated Dalmore(!) as well as whiskies from Glenfarclas, Mannochmore, Tamnavulin, Ben Nevis, Aultmore, Fettercairn, Pulteney and Jura.
