Fèis Ìle - The Islay Whisky Festival 2015

by Jake Mountain     15. May 2015 11:00

Feis Ile Islay That Boutique-y Whisky Company

As some of you may already know, we're sadly not going to be at Fèis Ìle this year. I know, I know. We had a good run though - attending the last four years in a row as Master of Malt, keeping you all (hopefully) entertained whether you'd made it along or not, running some great promotions and even kitting many of you out with some top notch drams, t-shirts and snazzy tote bags. And it was our absolute pleasure to do so.

There'll be no Malt Mobile to look out for this year though (much to the delight of Bowmore's bollards), no gratuitous shots of limited edition whiskies next to hot tubs or Port Ellen tastings and no week long series of our ramblings from the event. But if you are indeed going, especially if it's your first time, allow us to present our little guide to this year's festival...

Jake & Sam's Top 10 Greatest Ever Whisky Appearances in Film & TV!

by Master of Malt     12. May 2015 17:30

Top 5 Whisky Film TV

Something of a rarity this - a joint blog post! Jake and Sam are proud to present our top whisky appearances on the big and small screen.

So, with Blur's new album still relatively fresh off the press, we give you Whisky & TV! (You know, like Coffee & TV... Geddit?)

Sam: If you're going to call it that, I'm going to make my own list.

Jake: But...

Sam: Yeah. I'm definitely just doing my own list.

Jake: Fine, after you then. I didn't want any of your suggestions in my (super-fun-better-than-Sam's) list anyway.

[Jake holds back tears long enough to look a bit sulky.]

The Charity Run of the Bumblebee!

by Master of Malt     5. May 2015 16:00

Charity Bee Run

This bank holiday/Star Wars day weekend saw the Charity Bee Run take place! Wheels that were put in motion back on Glenfarclas 105 Day with our Facebook competition saw a bee's tired limbs still in motion at the end of a 21 mile scurry for charity seventeen days later.

Raising over £1,000 for Ripple Africa's Malawian secondary school scholarships; Andrew Wheelhouse, we salute you! Ably supported by his brother Chris, 'The B Team' got lost a couple of times, travelled through Pratt's Bottom, were nearly cornered by a herd of dairy cows and were forced to stop briefly when star struck by the dog from the Cesar adverts, but ultimately they prevailed! We were delighted to receive them at MoM Towers and to present them with their prize: a hard earned and colossal 3 litre bottle of Glenfarclas 105! We also took these champs for a slap up dinner to recharge their batteries before they buzzed off home again.

I don't think there can be(e) any doubt that Andrew was indeed the most deserving winner of our competition. The money he has raised already will allow nine Malawian children to attend secondary school for an entire year, and if you'd like to help him ensure access to eduction for even more, you can donate to this fantastic cause on Andrew's Givey Page.

Sorry guys… The Bruichladdich Prices *were* wrong

by Master of Malt     1. May 2015 18:25

Master Of Malt Single Casks Glass Closures

So, here's the thing. We fucked up. We got the pricing on our recently released Bruichladdich single casks wrong. To be precise, we accidentally used the figure per litre of pure alcohol instead of the figure per litre of finished liquid in our calculations. The prices of our bottlings are always based on the cost of the liquid, and in this case the costs we used were incorrect. This blog post, for the avoidance of doubt, was written on the naughty step. We took ourselves there.

New Innovative Glass Closures Now Available Separately For Just £1

by Master of Malt     30. April 2015 16:00

Master Of Malt Single Casks Glass Closures

You may have seen that we recently launched a couple of single casks that featured our shiny new innovative glass closures, which you can read all about here. We also invited you to give your feedback and one query that arose was whether we were going to sell the closures separately, after all, they'll fit any of the bottles in our Single Cask Series! We thought this was such a good idea that we should do it immediately. So we did.

Master of Cocktails - I'm a Fun Guy

Master of Cocktails I'm A Fun Guy

Right then everyone. Are we all ready for this week's #MasterofCocktails?

We're going somewhat off-piste this week, making a riff on the Boulevardier, but introducing massive Umami by firstly subbing the Campari for Cynar and secondly garnishing with a pickled Shiitake Mushroom, courtesy of the Pitt Cue Co. Cookbook.

The acid-umami it adds to the drink is truly wonderful, and transformative. If there was ever a cocktail for food...

Glenfarclas 105 Winner's Running 21 Miles for Charity to Claim Prize!

by Master of Malt     24. April 2015 15:00

Charity Bee Suit Run

Sometimes, a great thing happens off the back of something else unexpectedly. When we gave you all the chance to win a very rare, not-available-for-sale, mahoosive 3 litre bottle of Glenfarclas 105 on 105 Day (by telling us why you deserved it most on Facebook or Twitter), we expected some great responses. What we didn't perhaps expect was the sheer number of entries, or that thanks to our winner's brilliant response we'd all now have a chance to help raise some money for a great cause.

Deserved winner Andrew Wheelhouse will be running from London (Orpington) to Tunbridge Wells - over 21 miles - on Saturday 2nd May to collect his prize and to raise money that will allow 16 Malawian children to attend secondary school for an entire year. He's not a seasoned runner either (he had to go out and buy trainers when he found out he'd won!) so this is one hell of an undertaking. In the words of our new favourite person:

Six New Master of Malt Single Cask Bottlings PLUS We Present Our New Glass Closures

by Master of Malt     22. April 2015 07:59

Master Of Malt Single Casks Glass Closures

So then. Single Cask bottlings, eh? Specifically our Single Cask bottlings. It's been a little while since we've bottled a load of delicious whisky for our Single Cask Series, but we're happy to announce not one, not two, not four, but six brand new Master of Malt Single Cask Series bottlings! This bunch includes a 23 year old Ardbeg(!), a 23 year old Invergordon single grain, a 17 year old Ben Nevis and two Bruichladdich single malts.

Exciting, yes? Of course it is. What's also very exciting is that we're releasing two independently bottled single cask whiskies with innovative glass closures, making cork-taint in single malt whiskies a thing of the past. (To be honest, it's a bit of an experiment - we'd love to know what you think but we'll get to that in a minute.)

Master of Cocktails - The Old Pal

by Ben Ellefsen     13. April 2015 10:10

Master of Cocktails The Old pal

Right then - everyone about ready for a #MasterofCocktails?

This evening we're going to make an oft-overlooked drink, the 'Old Pal'. The use of Dry vermouth lends this drink a light and very 'aperitiffy' (definitely not a word) character which makes it a wonderful springtime drink.

We're going to start off by summoning up the energy to get off the sofa and walk over to the bar.

Master of Cocktails - The Bobby Burns

by Ben Ellefsen     7. April 2015 09:22

Master of Cocktails The Bobby Burns

For #MasterofCocktails this week we made a twist on the Rob Roy (which I've decided on balance might be a rubbish drink). It's called a 'Bobby Burns' - and uses a healthy slug of Bénédictine to give the whisky and vermouth a much-needed lift.

It's obviously named after the Scottish Bard, Robert Burns, but in the week that Lynyrd Skynyrd's original drummer Bob Burns tragically died it seems a fitting tribute to him as well.

So, let's get to it...
