Though most liqueurs can be drunk neat, they really come into their own when used in cocktails. There are certain drinks like the Negroni that are built around a certain type of liqueur, in this case Campari, or the Amaretto Sour. Whereas other liqueurs provide a seasoning note like Benedictine in a Viuex Carre, or a sweetness like triple sec in a Margarita. If you’re experimenting with liqueurs, a good way to begin is to ask what element you are looking for the liqueur to provide. So if your cocktail needs a sweet component, like in an Old Fashioned, why not use a flavourful liqueur like Grand Marnier instead of just plain sugar? Creamy cocktails can benefit from cream liqueurs like Baileys, while you can have a whole lot of fun swapping around the bitter component. A conventional Negroni becomes a white Negroni when you use Suze – a bitter French liqueur – instead of Campari, and swap the red vermouth for white. So get experimenting and have fun.

Five fun liqueur-led cocktails

White Negroni Recipe

A fresh, colourless take on the Italian classic cocktail. You could try another clear, bitter liqueur instead of Suze.

Ingredients:

25ml Suze

25ml White vermouth like Dolin Dry

25ml London dry gin like Tanqueray

Garnish: lemon twist

Method:

Add all the ingredients to an ice-filled rocks glass, give it a good stir and garnish with a twist of lemon.

Prep time: 5 min

Serves: 1

Grand Old Fashioned Recipe

The Old Fashioned is the earliest cocktail and would have originally been made with brandy so using Grand Marnier, an orange Cognac liqueur, is a good nod to the drink’s origins.

Ingredients:

30ml Bourbon such as Wild Turkey 101

Garnish: orange twist

Method:

In a tumbler add the Angostura bitters, Grand Marnier, and whiskey. Add ice, ideally one large block, and stir until cold. Express an orange twist and place over the lip of the glass.

Prep time: 5 min

Serves: 1

Tipperary Cocktail

A Manhattan-esque cocktail that’s heavy on one of the most distinctive liqueurs out there, the mighty Green Chartreuse.

Ingredients:

35ml Irish whiskey like Powers Gold Label Distiller’s Cut

35ml Sweet vermouth like Martini Rosso

Garnish: orange or lemon twist

Method:

Stir thoroughly over ice and strain into a chilled coupe. Serve with an orange or lemon twist.

Prep time: 5 min

Serves: 1

Rusty Manhattan Recipe

This is taken from Alice Lascelles’ 'Cocktail Edit' book and adds the honeyed sweetness of Drambuie whisky liqueur to a classic American cocktail.

Ingredients:

35ml Rye whiskey like Michter’s US*1

25ml Sweet vermouth like Martini Rosso

Method:

Add all ingredients to an ice-filled shaker and stir until very cold. Strain into an ice-filled rocks glass.

Prep time: 5 min

Serves: 1

Margarita Azul Recipe

And finally, liqueurs can be about colour as much as flavour. This tastes just like a conventional Margarita but it’s better because it’s blue!

Ingredients:

30ml Bols Blue Curaçao

25ml Fresh lime juice

10ml Sugar syrup

Garnish: lime wedge

Method:

Shake and fine strain into pre-chilled Margarita glass. Garnish with a wedge of lime.

Prep time: 3 min

Serves: 1
