Today, Brown-Forman and Pernod Ricard confirm the merger talks are no longer rumour.

Both companies reveal they’re in discussions about a potential “business combination”, following reports that broke on 26 March.

Near-identical statements issued within an hour of each other acknowledged the speculation and confirmed talks are underway.

A “merger of equals”

Both sides are framing it as a “merger of equals”, drawing on the strengths of each business to create what they describe as a global spirits leader.

That means scale, a broader portfolio, and a more balanced geographic spread, anchored, as they put it, by two iconic family-backed companies.

Pernod Ricard owns Jameson, Chivas Regal, The Glenlivet, Aberlour, Ballantine’s, Absolut Vodka, Beefeater, Havana Club, Malibu, Martell, and Perrier-Jouët.

Brown-Forman’s major brands include Jack Daniel’s, Woodford Reserve, Old Forester, Herradura, El Jimador, and Finlandia

Details thin for now

Pernod Ricard pointed to “significant” operational synergies, highlighting the combination of Brown-Forman’s brands with its own global distribution network and reach in high-growth markets.

Beyond that, details are thin. There’s no timeline, no structure, and no indication yet of how a deal would be shaped. Both companies were quick to stress that there’s no guarantee an agreement will be reached, and said they won’t comment further unless talks progress or collapse.

Next marker to watch: Pernod Ricard reports its fiscal Q3 results on 16 April. If this moves forward, expect a clearer picture then.
