When is World Whisky Day?
There are a few notable days in the whisky calendar each year. The first is International Whisky Day, which falls on 27 March each year and was first observed in 2008. It was created in honour of the drinks writer Michael Jackson, and is celebrated on Jackson's birthday – not only is it about celebrating Jackson and whisky, but the day also publicly supports Parkinson's disease research.
Then there’s World Whisky Day, which was founded by Blair Bowman in 2012 and falls on the third Saturday of May each year. More of an organised affair, there are events across the world where whisky lovers can celebrate the day – In 2015, World Whisky Day events were registered on all seven continents!
Whisky regions of the world
Scotch Whisky
Scotland, the heartland of whisky, has been perfecting this art for centuries. Scotch whisky is renowned for its diversity, governed by strict laws ensuring its quality and authenticity. It's primarily divided into two categories: Single Malts and Blends. Single Malt Scotch offers a range of flavours from the light, floral notes of the Lowlands to the rich, peaty character of Islay. Blended Scotch, a mix of malt and grain whiskies, boasts smoothness and consistency, with famous brands known globally. It also tends to be more budget-friendly. Irish Whiskey
Irish whiskey, generally triple-distilled, is famous for its light, fruity, and approachable character. Traditionally unpeated, it offers a distinctly different profile from its Scottish cousin. The category includes Single Malt, Single Pot Still (made from a mix of malted and unmalted barley), and Grain Whiskey. Brands like Jameson and Bushmills have helped drive the global popularity of Irish whiskey. American Whiskey
American whiskey is a broad category encompassing various styles. The most famous of these styles are Bourbon and Tennessee Whiskey. Bourbon, primarily made from corn, is sweet and full-bodied, often with notes of vanilla, oak, and caramel. Tennessee Whiskey, such as Jack Daniel's, goes through additional charcoal filtration. This is known as the Lincoln County Process, offering a smoother profile. Rye whiskey, made from rye grain, is spicier and more robust, making a comeback in the cocktail scene.
Canadian Whisky
Often referred to as "rye" regardless of its composition, Canadian whisky is known for being smooth and light. Aged for a minimum of 3 years in oak, these whiskies often blend various grain spirits. Rye is the most traditional ingredient, imparting a spicy and fruity profile.
Japanese Whisky
Japanese whisky has gained international acclaim for its quality and craftsmanship. It often mirrors the Scottish style, with both single malts and blends. However there are unique elements like Japanese oak (Mizunara), which brings a distinct spicy and incense-like note. Brands like Yamazaki and Nikka have become highly sought after for their elegant and refined profiles.
Australian Whisky
The Australian whisky scene has been making waves with its innovative
approach. Using local ingredients and often ageing in wine casks,
Australian whiskies offer a unique and varied palette of flavours.
Distilleries like Sullivan's Cove
have gained international recognition, winning numerous awards.
Indian Whisky
Indian whisky has risen in prominence with brands like Amrut and Paul John. The tropical climate of India accelerates the ageing process, imparting a rich and intense flavour profile to the whisky. Indian whiskies often use local grains and draw from the country’s climatic conditions. The result is as unique as the country itself. Other Whiskies of the World
Beyond these traditional whisky-producing nations, there is a new wave of sweeping the globe. This includes countries like Taiwan, Germany, Sweden, and South Africa. All of these are crafting unique interpretations of whisky. They are experimenting with local grains, innovative ageing processes, and diverse climates. The result is the creation of unique and surprising expressions.
Each style of whisky, be it a peaty Scotch or the smooth subtlety of Canadian whisky, offers a glimpse into the culture and history of its place of origin. The world of whisky is a testament to human creativity and the enduring appeal of this timeless spirit.
Whether enjoyed neat, on the rocks, or as part of a cocktail, whisky remains a versatile and endlessly fascinating spirit, with a style to suit every palate and occasion.
