A diverse category

It’s hard to generalise about English whisky because this tiny but fast-growing industry makes such a broad array of spirits.

The pioneering English Distillery in Norfolk, which released its first whisky in 2009, produces classic single malts, but there are producers making corn and rye spirits as well as doing all kinds of innovative things with column stills and casks.

All we can say is that if you love bold flavours, then you’ll love English whisky.

An English single malt

Since its launch in 2017, the Cotswolds Single Malt has proved itself as an English classic. Indeed, it has become so popular that the distillery had to expand hugely in 2023 to keep up with demand.

Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky

This is the flagship single malt whisky from the Cotswolds Distillery. It’s made using barley grown in the Cotswolds, distilled in their Forsyths copper pot stills (Mary & Janis) and aged in a combination of ex-bourbon and STR (shaved, toasted and recharred) red wine casks. If you love a ripe, round single malt with big flavours, then look no further.

The Cotswolds story

The Cotswolds Distillery was founded by Dan Szor, a native New Yorker who spent 25 years in Europe before moving to the Cotswolds in 2011. A single malt lover, he was inspired to leave it all behind and make whisky, thinking his new idyllic English countryside home was the perfect place for it.

While the whisky matured, he created a range of gin, as well as numerous other spirits that have proved incredibly popular. The first single malt release was in 2017.

Tasting Notes

Nose

The first thing you notice are spicy cereal notes, malt, and porridge, followed by the fruit - orange peel and lemon. Grassy and floral flavours followed by marzipan.

Palate

Beautiful texture, creamy and round, with sweet citrus fruit and black pepper.

Finish

Good length. There’s vanilla custard and a lift of aromatic freshness that will make you want another sip.
