Swedish Whisky

Swedish whisky is one of the most impressive new forces in the whisky world, carving a considerable space for itself in a crowded global scene thanks to the quality of the spirit made there. Sweden has a long history of producing vodka and other spirits, but its journey into whisky production is relatively recent. In a short space of time, distilleries in Sweden have embraced the tradition of whisky making, infusing it with distinctive Swedish characteristics – from local barley, peat, and pristine water, sourced from untainted rivers and underground springs to innovative ageing processes that include the use of Swedish oak as well as casks that previously held Swedish wine or berries. The unique Swedish climate also plays a significant role in the maturation process. One of the pioneers in the field is Mackmyra Svensk Whisky, established in 1999. It laid the foundation for the Swedish whisky movement and proved that exceptional whisky could come from the heart of Scandinavia. Since then, a number of distilleries, including Box (now High Coast), Spirit of Hven, and Smögen, have followed suit.
