What's that we spy off the starboard side? It's a new single malt whisky from Old Pulteney! The Navigator is a maritime malt aged in a mix of ex-sherry and bourbon casks in celebration of the distillery's history with the ocean and the old sea dogs that sail it.
Nose: Sweet, succulent apple lashings with dollops of chocolate and vanilla.
Palate: Drips of honey and syrup-y orange.
Finish: A salty finish sneaks up from nowhere, very nice.
Overall: Set sail for tasty single malt!

After drinking the OP 12 as my day-to-day whisky for the past year, I tried a bottle of The Navigator when my local merchant ran out of the 12. Although it has the signature OP salt sea-air aroma, it has a good deal of heat going down, which is probably to be expected in a whisky without an age statement. Since the very mellow 12 is about the same price as The Navigator, at least here in the US, I think the former is a better buy for the money.

I love the Old Pultney range of age statement malts. But this has some astringent and raw alcohol resulting from a rushed distilling process or from using very young casks. I wish there was more sherry influence but cannot taste anything but Bourbon. You are better off saving money and buying the excellent OP 12 year old.

Purchased for $45 and I am pretty happy with it. Not that smooth but it is a NAS and it's at 46% and its a highland so I'm not sure why you think it would be. It's all about the flavor with this one creamy, fruity, coastal goodness like eating vanilla pudding with some raisins in it by the sea. There is a slight soapiness to it but I think that's because it is young. I like that it is non-chill filtered and natural color though. I'd say this is pretty equivalent to the 12 year with this being stronger but the 12 year a little smoother.Worth a try. Cheers! The Sugarbear

Many other bottles for a similar price that are much more complex.

One of my favourites, great session whisky with a lovely vanilla aftertaste

There are much nicer whiskies out there. This ones quite hard to get on with. Quite harsh, tastes young, bit salty and not sweet enough. No idea where the supposed sherry comes from in the description there are none of those notes on the nose or taste. Look at the colour of it; this is not a sherried whisky. Scraped 3 stars.

Old Putney is a very pleasant malt but I don't know where they found this one. I can honestly say the bottle I have is the roughest malt I have ever tasted and not worthy of the name. It's only use will be medicinal from now on. Perhaps I purchased a 'bad' bottle?

The colour is rich and gold like in appearance and when rolled around the glass is quite syrupy. The nose has aromas of stewed sweet bramley apple with notes of vanilla and dairy milk chocolate. There are hints of lemon, orange and honey in the background. The flavour has notes of spice with a bitter orange citrusy flavour, liquorice and the trade mark Old Pulteney brine. There are hints of vanilla, and a slight honey sweetness in the background. The finish is medium long and warming with notes of brine and lemon zest coming back. This whisky is immensely drinkable and has provided me with a really exciting rival to the most excellent Old Pulteney 12year old!! I wonder however if this would have been even better bottled at a slightly higher ABV ??

I LOVE Old Pulteney Navigator!!! It's difficult for me to get, as I live in a rural area of Illinois, USA. I really like the 12 year old, too.

Personally, I would rank this one higher than the 12y, despite a lack of age statement. I don't know if it's the "hand picked" casks that make the difference here, but this was a surprisingly delicious dram for the price (about $44USD) and I finished the bottle in about 3 days as a result. If you like Old Pulteney 12, definitely give this one a try.
