Laphroaig Brodir Bottling Note

Laphroaig's Brodir single malt Scotch whisky was originally released to the Travel Retail market. You can probably guess what 'Brodir' means in ancient Norse - of course, it's 'Brother'.

For this expression, the Islay distillers first matured the whisky in ex-bourbon barrels before transferring it over to casks which previous held Ruby Port. The combination of Laphroaig's classic coastal peaty gorgeousness with the elegance of the Ruby Port finish make Brodir a very handsome dram indeed.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose: Fresh honey drizzled over dried tropical fruit, followed by a salty sea breeze.

Palate: Quite refreshing and light (for a Laphroaig). Continued fruitiness on the palate, somewhat juicier than the nose might suggest. Smoke pops up a little later.

Finish: Rich smoke on the finish grows and grows.

Laphroaig Brodir Reviews

A great malt

I'm a great fan of Laphroaig and this bottle bought by my son as a Christmas present doesn't disappoint at all. I could drink this all night long!,
A wonderful smokey malt.

Best of the best

Absolute best of the best, this is top notch whisky.
Always loved Laphroaig, I know it's good, but I'm still absolutely suprised and amazed by just how good this is. 10/10, fair price as well.

Wasn't a fan

Wasn't a fan of Laphroaig until now, this blew me away, is an exceptional dram without the overwhelming medicinal notes. Superb.

Don't complicate things by talking about chocolate and berries. Too many anoraks out there!!!!

This port cask finish malt is ridiculously gorgeous. Talisker Portruigh (which was my favourite all time single malt) has just been overtaken by the Laphroaig Brodir. Well worth the extra few quid.

Tar, smoke and sweetness

Really good whisky, maybe not worth the price but one of the best laphroaigs I've had.

Wonderful

I love the way this one reverses the palate experience compared to a standard Laphroaig. The peat is nowhere at first giving way to sweetness and fruitcake. Then the smoke starts to grow and grow. And then it lingers a bit more. Beautiful

Complex, classic Laphroaig with an added sweet dimension

This whiskey contains the classic, tasty underpinnings of Laphroaig 10 year old but with the added dimensions of a sweetness from the bourbon and port influence. The smoke builds quickly into a bold punch after a subtle start of fruit and sweet but ends with more sweet vanilla and cinnamon. I don't think I've ever tasted a whiskey with such complexity of flavors that did so well to balance the smoke and sweetness. It was like tasting a liquid of cascading tasting notes that didn't end until long after the drink ended.

A masterclass in using port casks

A great showing of how port casks can enhance flavours without completely overtaking the whisky. There’s definitely berries in there, as well as chocolate but there’s still a whole lot of peat smoke, vanilla, sea breeze and tar as well.

Very Good, not quite 2013 Portwood Cairdeas, but smoother

This is not for you Kentucky bourbon folks. Geez, educate yourself on what you are drinking.
You gotta' love burning band-aids and peat.

A more gentlemanly version of the 2013 Portwood Cairdeas.

Dry and clean

It's dry with a pinch of sweetness. Very pure and clean. I think this could be a good step for wine drinker to move to smoky whiskies. Brodir is not as sweet and complex as Quarter cask is, but it's not scaring peatmonster like 10 is either. Good, dry whisky for as an side dish with sweet cocktail.
