A fascinating Mezcal from El Rey Zapoteco, which has been producing artisinal Mezcal in Oaxaca for 60 years! This particular expression is made using the Cuishe agave varietal which grows wild and tends to take around 12-15 years to reach maturity. Traditional production methods such as crushing the agave with a horse-drawn stone mill, and cooking it for days in a stone pit underground are reflected in the quality of this wonderful sipper.
Plenty of funky herbaceous character here, with wafts of spearmint, menthol, and dried sage leading to sweeter aloe vera and bold notes of roasted coffee, tanned leather, and cakey spice.
