The Small Beer Company was founded in London’s Bermondsey, by ex-Sipsmith Gin duo James Grundy and Felix James, who claim that it is the world’s first ‘small beer’ brewery. It’s dedicated to brewing beers between 0.5% and 2.8.% ABV in the style of the 18th century 'small beer', which was a by-product of an era in which there was an unreliable supply of clean drinking water and alternatives were required (it won’t fly if you try and use this excuse now, people).
The Small Beer Company produces all boxes, labels and business cards from recycled paper and has reduced the pints of water required per pint of beer from up to 10 to just 1.5. In addition, it adopted a ‘dry floor policy’, which is the first such policy of its kind as far as the brand knows.
But don’t take our word for it. You can hear from Felix James on the potential of small beer in this blog post.
