Baptista Wines
Baptista Wines, made by experienced winemaker David Traeger, represent the art of winemaking. David, with over 45 years in the field, produces wines for enjoyment. These wines have rich fruit flavours and gain complexity from oak ageing. They are good to drink young or aged.
David Traeger's Method
David Traeger makes wines that are easy to enjoy and have clear varietal traits. Each wine shows its origin and is made sustainably. This makes Baptista Wines taste good and be kind to the environment.
Baptista - Ancient Vines
The story began in the 1870s with Baptista Governa, an Italian in Nagambie. He was first a cobbler, then owned a wine saloon and worked in timber. He bought land near Major’s Creek at Graytown and planted vines in 1891.
These vines grow in fertile, well-drained soils with ironstone gravels. The vineyard has a shallow water table. This helps the vines grow well, even in dry weather. The focus is on producing high-quality grapes.
David Traeger bought this vineyard in 1993. He had used its fruit since 1988. The first Baptista Shiraz came out in 1996. It included two barriques of wine in Magnums, which are still maturing.
Maranoa
Maranoa is the name for David’s Verdelho wines. He has made this type of wine since 1990. Verdelho is from Portugal and likely came to Australia early on. It is used for both dry white and fortified wines.
Three Centuries
Three Centuries is a label that honours old vines in Australia. This wine is a blend of Shiraz from different times. It includes grapes from the 19th, 20th, and 21st centuries. Each vineyard adds its own touch to the wine.
Baptista Wines reflect David Traeger's passion and skill. From Baptista's old vines to the Maranoa Verdelho and the Three Centuries blend, each wine has its own story. It talks of heritage, quality, and care for the environment. David’s commitment to making enjoyable and eco-friendly wines means Baptista Wines are not just good to drink. They also honour Australia’s winemaking history.
