Whisky Santa’s Whisky Advent Day 3: Evan Williams Single Barrel

Evan Williams Single Barrel

Time to open the third window of our Whisky Advent Calendars and see what surprise lies behind it… why I think this is a bourbon… Yes, it’s Evan Williams Single Barrel Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey!

They’ve been producing Evan Williams at family-owned Heaven Hill since 1959 you know, and it’s named after the chap who was purportedly Kentucky’s first ever commercial distiller. I remember young Evan very well, of course, but as an omniscient supernatural being I’m not allowed to clear up these little historical facts for you I’m afraid. Rules is rules. Besides, there’s some delicious bourbon to taste…

Drinks by the Dram Christmas Crackers!

Drinks by the Dram Christmas Crackers

Before we get started, yes, we know. We’re banging on about Christmas and it’s not even Halloween yet. Most of us at MoM Towers are only just putting the finishing touches to our costumes – this year I’m changing it up from my usual Beastie Boys ‘Sabotage’ cop and going as a horse with Jake. He’s kindly volunteered to be the back half (but he doesn’t know that yet).

However, the Drinks by the Dram Christmas Crackers were recently put up for pre-order and now we can’t but feel all Christmassy and whatnot. Just look at these handsome little rascals! Don’t expect to find any tiny rulers, giant plastic paper-clips or ridiculously easy puzzles here, oh no. These Christmas Crackers are filled with award-winning spirits and liqueurs!

WINNER of the Exclusive Overeem Bourbon Cask Release Competition

Old Hobart Overeem casks

For the last month we’ve been running a cracking little competition offering the chance for one lucky winner to join a select panel of whisky experts later this month that will decide which bourbon cask will be bottled as the first ever bourbon matured Overeem Tasmanian whisky! The selected whisky will be a UK exclusive, a release of just 50 bottles at 60% abv, with the winner also bagging themselves a bottle – a personalised one at that!

How would this lucky winner be chosen? Well, not by luck at all actually, but by writing the best tasting note for Overeem Sherry Cask 43% single malt whisky (with two runners up winning bottles of this popular expression).

Exclusive Overeem Bourbon Cask Release Competition

Old Hobart Overeem casks

WIN a place on the panel to choose which cask gets bottled as well as receiving a special personalised bottle of the resulting limited edition release!

A proper competition this, for all you malt fans out there. The marvellous folk at the Old Hobart distillery in Tasmania are wonderful whisky makers, but are sometimes a little indecisive. Alongside his truly excellent Sherry and port cask releases, Head Distiller and distillery owner Casey Overeem has – for the first time – filled a small number of specially re-sized bourbon casks with his wonderful single malt! The trouble is they all taste superb, so he’s having a little trouble to decide which one to release first in the UK… that’s where you come in.

Master of Cocktails – Christmassy Ginger Sour

Master of Cocktails Christmassy Ginger Sour

Here we are, in the second week of advent already! It must be time for the first, but definitely not the last, #MasterofCocktails Christmassy drink of December, this one being a festive twist on a classic…

You see, we love a good whiskey sour, but we also sure do love warming, Christmassy flavours at this time of year with ginger being one of the yummiest and most satisfying of them all. Back in October we not only made the perfect Eggnog but also some Bathtub Ginger Beer using fresh ginger and (perhaps unsurprisingly) ginger beer. Both cocktail recipes are well worth a revisit as we approach Christmas, but this time around we’ll be getting our ginger warmth from an excellent ginger liqueur as well as gingerbread syrup, which brings some darn’ tasty baked goodness into the mix!

For Christmas this year…

Dear Santa

With plans to make Christmas 2013 closely resemble a night out with Charles Bukowski during his downtime, I’ve been thinking hard about what booze I want. Historically, I would have written to Santa Claus, but I recently read a thought-provoking essay by biologist Dickie Dawkins and now no longer believe in his existence. This, then, is an open letter to anyone who knows me and wants to get me the boozes.

Master of Cocktails – Bourbon Vanilla Shake

Master of Cocktails Bourbon Vanilla Shake

Sunday was the first day of advent, and as literally thousands of giddy adults cracked open the first window of their Drinks by the Dram Advent Calendars I wanted to make another grown-up version of a childhood favourite to go along with them.

So, we made a Bourbon Milkshake! People like milkshakes. That’s proven. This one’s incredibly straight-forward and absolutely delicious. Before we get started though, it would be crazy of me to mention the Advent Calendars without sharing this brilliant video with you, released today! See how many people you can recognise. It even includes an incredibly handsome man all tucked up in bed with some kind of wintery weather-induced malady…

Heavy Sherry, Fresh Bourbon, Grain and ‘something a bit special’. TBWC strikes again.

That Boutique-y Whisky Company October releases

Told you we’d be back soon (and we’re not done yet)…

Another week, and another 4 brand-spanking-new releases from That Boutique-y Whisky Company have hit the shelves in time for Christmas. Once again I’m left trying to justify the madness that’s escaped from my bonce and onto the labels of these fine drams…

So – let’s start with the most obvious of the 4. A Giant with a fondness for Jam Sandwiches stealing a giant hat from a dunnage warehouse whilst all unnecessary on Bourbon. That? That.

Hudson Whiskey

Hudson Whiskey Baby Bourbon

The Hudson Whiskey range boasts the first legally distilled and aged grain spirits produced in New York since Prohibition! Fantastic in itself, Tuthilltown Spirits’ craft distillery (yep, another one – we love ’em!) charm certainly runs deeper than this single fact, with its very existence oweing much to fate and circumstance. Its success however is owed only to hard work and the high quality of what they have managed to create in the past few years.

When Ralph Erenzo bought Tuthilltown Gristmill and the 35 acres that surrounded it, distilling was far from the professional climber’s thoughts. Originally, he had dreamt of creating the perfect climber’s paradise: a ranch that would act as a base camp for those wishing to scale the cliffs at nearby Shawangunk Ridge.
