We are an incredibly diverse workplace and workforce, which includes everyone from data scientists and web developers; to commercial, service, marketing and sales professionals at all levels; to forklift operators and warehouse fulfilment workers.

For the Christmas peak we will generally grow our workforce by 100% and will trial hundreds of temporary workers to find the best the market has to offer.

Our growth over the last seven years has been phenomenal, and we need to backfill much of our HR function to make it fit for purpose for a business of our scale and complexity. This includes: rigorous line-management and associated processes throughout the business; coherent job grading, salary banding and remuneration policy; wellbeing and engagement measurement & management programmes; and talent management and personal & professional development strategies. Everything, basically.

About the role

This role will be an amazing challenge, and an incredible opportunity to start from scratch and develop best-in-class processes and policies from the ground up.

Main purpose of the role:

  • To act as HR Business Partner for the Board and each sub-division in the business; challenging, mentoring, influencing and leading by example where necessary.
  • To be the senior HR Generalist and to manage and develop the HR team to deliver the day-to-day and annual workload of the function.
  • To plan and execute projects to deliver our company values, culture, and employee engagement & wellbeing initiatives.

    About you

    You are commercially astute, and can demonstrate through experience in a commercial or HR Business Partner role that you are able to understand the business’ objectives and align them with the strategies, policies and procedures of the HR function. Likewise, you can demonstrate hands-on experience putting line management principles into practice.

    You are a credible leader. You are able to establish respect, trust and buy-in at all levels by bringing to bear your experience and business acumen. You are humane and personable, but also rational. You debate complex and contentious issues with a level head and persuasive argument.

    You are tenacious and resilient, being able to think creatively and operate in a fast-moving environment. You would rather bring order to chaos, but failing that you are able to navigate the chaos and operate effectively under pressure.

    You have a degree or similar advanced academic or professional qualification, ideally CIPD certification or chartered membership. You have a working knowledge of employment law and keep your finger on the pulse of the ever-changing landscape.

    You’ve had several years in a senior role as either an HR Business Partner or Generalist, with an aptitude for both. You have many tales to tell of of the incidents you’ve had to handle, the successful programmes you’ve delivered, and the large-scale business change you’ve helped to manage.

    You love your 9 box matrix and are action-orientated about getting the best of the best in the door, getting the best out of those that are in the business, and, failing that, getting those that can’t cut it out of the business. You don’t relish the prospect of the latter, but you understand that it’s in the best interests of everyone involved and so you support the business and the managers in doing what needs to be done.

    You are passionate about delivering the best working environment and experience to the workforce because you understand it’s a great way to motivate people and to retain talent. You will manage the Office Management function in the business to help you to deliver your vision for the workplace and to help deliver engagement and wellbeing initiatives.

    We think we’ll probably need to offer in the region of £45-55k to turn your head. There are all sorts of other perks to working here beyond salary, but we can discuss that further when you apply.

    This is a very important role for us, so we’re going to put you through the mill a bit to make sure we’re right for each other. That means a few rounds of interview and almost certainly some aptitude and psychometric assessment. Not that that would phase you…
