Friuli is the region to the north of Venice that borders Slovenia. The wines tend to have an alpine freshness about them. The grape variety used is the schioppettino which is fermented in stainless steel before a portion is aged in barrels so you get a very subtle oakiness. Schioppettino aka ribolla bera produces fruity perfumed wines and is very rarely seen outside its native region. In fact, it almost died out completely following phylloxera but was revived in the 1970s and now there's an annual festival devoted to it in the town of Prepotto.
Red berries on the nose with black pepper spice. Superfresh and succulent on the palate with perfumed red cherries, ripe tannins and fresh herbs.
