Abruzzo to the east of Rome on the Adriatic sea is where southern Italy begins. It's the home of Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, montepulciano being the name of the grape. Confusingly there's also a town in Tuscany called Montepulciano which also produces a notable wine. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo is usually cheap and fruity but this example is an altogether more serious proposition, packed with dark fruit and ripe tannins. It would be ideal with some meaty food, like a slow-cooked shoulder of lamb.
Big wine with dark fruit like plums and sloes, meaty tannins and spicy aromatic notes. Enormous fun.
