A sensational Hungarian red wine, Egri Bikaver is one of the most famous and regarded in the country. The 2016 vintage was crafted with grape varieties including Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Zweigelt, Kékfrankos and Blauburgercomes which were harvested from the Eger wine region of northern Hungary.
The name Egri Bikaver translates to the 'Bull's Blood of Eger', which refers to a story about a small group of Hungarian soldiers who were served served delicious food and a lot of red wine during the Siege of Eger castle. Against the odds, the defenders repelled the attacks and defended the castle and a rumour was spread among the Turkish soldiers that bull's blood was mixed into the red wine as an explanation as to how the small band managed to display enough strength and resistance to force the attackers to give up.
Plenty of dark, almost tarry fruit notes at first, with slightly tart red cherry and a bit of spice. The wine also has a lively acidity and retains a tight tannic structure throughout.
