Whisky by flavour
Choosing between hundreds or thousands of whiskies can be overwhelming to say the least. One of the best ways to find a new favourite or a perfect gift is to shop by flavour or taste. We've organised the world of whisky into five instantly understandable groups to help you explore this amazing and diverse spirit.
Smoky & Peaty
Many whiskies are distinctly smoky. Ranging from full on bonfire to more subtle wisps, from medicinal or coastal to flavours of wood or heather smoke.
Fresh Fruit & Vanilla
For these whiskies think juicy, ripe peaches and nectarines, crème brûlée, and cinnamon spice flavours. Perhaps even tropical notes of pineapple and coconut.
Rich Fruit & Nut
Dried fruits lead the way here with raisins and sultanas, sometimes with hazelnut or walnut. Think Christmas cake, cocoa, maybe some marmalade for good measure.
Fragrant & Floral
Light and elegant with a grassy character or notes of fresh flowers and citrus blossoms. Pear drops, green apple and other light fruit notes can also lead the way in this group.
Cereal & Oak
Whisky is made from cereal grains such as malted barley, and these whiskies place their characteristic biscuity flavours centre stage, complemented by gentle oak maturation.
Select any of the whisky flavour groups above to explore whiskies according to how they taste. For each style you'll find whisky bottle recommendations as well as information about where these flavours come from. If you want to learn more, you can also check out our Whisky Guides below.
We created these flavour groups after locking some of our experts in a room for 'long enough' with nothing but Post-it notes, a single Sharpie and their many opinions. We then took the five notes that weren't scrunched up on the floor, along with some inspiration from whisky writer Dave Broom's 'flavour camps' with which they closely aligned, et voilà.
