An American single malt whiskey from the Seattle-based craft distillery Westland (Craft Producer of the Year - Icons of Whisky 2016) matured in casks that previously held Oloroso and Pedro Ximénez Sherry.
Raisins, milk chocolate and fresh malt, with a little bit of honey too.
Pancakes with honey, icing sugar and fresh red fruits. A few more raisins for good measure.
Crème de Cassis and vanilla-y malt.
I love a good sherry-finished single malt and was excited to see an American version, but this is incredibly disappointing. Not smooth, lack of character, and limited sherry impact. I really wanted this to be better. Definitely not worth the $80 price tag. I really think they need to age this longer to create better character.
Gave it a go as I love a sherry finish (though have only previously tasted Scotch rather than American single malt) as I saw the World Whisky awards Westland has one recently. It is pricey but a good level of sweetness combined with a 50% abv. "pancakes with honey" sums it up nicely, though I would throw maple syrup into the mix too
Went a bit heavy with the sherry. I get a very strong sulfur after taste. Honestly disappointed with how expensive this bottle was vs something like Stranahan's. I've heard better things about Westland's other releases. Skip this one.
I was handed this dram in the US and it was glorious, quite focused on cocoa, chocolate and malt. After purchasing, this tastes a lot like a modestly successful sherry finish. Too much raisin and insufficient malt character.
