A 70cl bottling of the excellent Willet's Pot Still Reserve - not only is it a cracking small batch Kentucky bourbon, but it comes in bottles shaped like a pot still, which we love.
Dense brown sugar at first, with lemon and orange peels giving it a light fruitiness.
Warming pepper and clove. Buttery corn, with a little caramel later on.
Still rich in toffee. Some touches of floral oak.
Awesome intensity at nose with no alcohol at all, but lacks complexity. Same think on the mouth but has a bad aftertaste of sweetener. Quite spicy at the beginning of mouthfeel, this Bourbon show sweet notes of corn and some herbal freshness like grass. A hint of dried fruits and wood in the back, but not oak.
Given to me as a gift, I haven't tried that many bourbons, but here's what I thought. I get the brown sugar on the nose, but after that, just the alcohol. On the palate, I can taste the pepper and cloves, perhaps a little bit of the caramel. The finish is there. I like this bourbon overall, but it is a little harsh, a drop of water takes the edge off it, but takes something away from the flavour too. Love the bottle shape, but I think, for the price, I'd try something else next time.
This was recommended to my by a liquor store employee when I told them I wanted Blanton's but knew they were out. He said the Willett's was very nice. I liked the bottle but everything about the bourbon was harsh to me. The nose was very harsh and all I could smell was alcohol, no sweet bourbon aroma. The flavor matched the smell. Maybe I got a bad bottle because I see good reviews of this stuff all over the internet. If someone offers a sample to me at a social gathering, I will give it another try but not paying for it until then.
Delicious. One of my current favorites.
This is one of the more unique and complex American bourbons that I've tried. It has a very pleasant and playful taste.
