American Prairie Bourbon is named after the impressive 5,000 square mile wildlife reserve in northeastern Montana, the largest in the lower 48 states. High West are also donating 10% of post tax profits from this whiskey to the project.
The whiskey itself is a small-batch blend of two straight Bourbons, a 6 year from Seagrams in Lawrenceberg, Indiana and a 10 year old from Four Roses with a higher rye content in the mashbill by comparison:
6 year old Bourbon: Mashbill of 75% Corn, 20% rye, 5% barley malt.
10 year old Bourbon: Mashbill of 60% Corn, 35% rye, and 5% barley malt.
Light caramel notes supported by mixed peels and cinnamon.
Sweet, toasty spices, vanilla, cherries and manuka honey.
Peanut brittle, chocolate orange and hints of dried red berries.
Quite a light Bourbon with subtle oak.
A lil on the sweet side but i can get behind this! It rings of Candy Corn at the end to me but on the nose is heavy on the Dill. Oddly they pair well as the dill turns to a mild spice and helps add another dimension to the syrupy sweetness from that inital rush of candy corn.
The picture used is for the high west ‘reserve’ offering which is wrong, the bourbon that comes has a pronghorn on the front and is called high west bourbon, and the description is wrong of the mashbill as they are still describing the high west reserve, The high west ‘bourbon’ which is what they send has a 3 year and 13 year bourbon mash bill, confusing but 2 very different bourbons Nose: oranges, rye spice, bit floral, vanilla and caramel classic bourbon smells Palate: let sit for 5 minutes if you can, initially Smokey like a subtle peat, goes after you let it sit, orange again, rye again, peels, caramel and toffee, very tame little burn Overall very nice actually, I like it a lot and the bottles are amazing and unique, they have a hammered effect and an old west vibe going on Will definitely try the rendezvous rye next
Really smooth, good old fashioned blended bourbon
