Tailfire is one of two no age statement single malt Scotch whiskies released for the Singleton of Dufftown range in 2014 (the other being Sunray). In tune with the berry red label, the Tailfire is a fruit-laden expression, with a high proportion of the whisky coming from European Sherry casks.
Crisp apple, red grape, raspberry and candied orange peel all jump out. A grassy green note and Wensleydale & Cranberry maintain balance whilst a touch of tobacco develops over time.
Raspberry bush, more Wensleydale. Oats, vanilla and a hint of pepper.
Drying and hot (rod) with lip smacking fruitiness.
A vibrant, berried Singleton with enough depth to keep you interested.
I've been used to the 12 yo Singleton. Probably the most beatiful, well balanced single malt a small wallet can buy. In front of me stands the bottle of Tailfire. "Vibrant, fruity, fresh", is what the label promises me. The dram rolls elegantly through my glass. It's clear coppery color appeals to me. My nose picks up lots of fruity impressions, most of them dried fruit such as raisins, but also sweet apples. In my mouth, the strong and persuasive taste reveals more fruit, but it's rather unreffined. Very unlike Singleton. To finish it off, the dram tends to get a bit bitter and dry while rounding off. I must say this whisky is pretty good, but for less money, I'd take the 12 yo anyday. (RB)
Initially you do get the red fruit nose and little touches of spices such as nutmeg here and there but the palate is what lets this dram down. Quite one dimensional
Bought one in a local super market for €28. Absolutely amazing for that price!
