Whisky of the world: No side quest
Whiskies made beyond Scotland and Ireland are not quaint, experimental oddities for drinking after you’ve finished the serious business. There is spirit being made in all corners of the globe and some of it is among the best you can buy today.
Australia has Starward raiding wine country for casks and making full-bodied, fruit-soaked drams. India has Amrut wielding warm climates to turn whisky into something deeply satisfying without waiting around for generations. Canada has Lot 40, a rye so useful in cocktails bartenders practically start polishing the mixing glass when they see it coming.
Japan? Nikka From The Barrel and Taketsuru remain two favourites. And Michter’s keeps doing the Kentucky thing with such annoying consistency that the awards cabinets must now qualify as load-bearing architecture.
Better still, buy any of these selected whiskies and we’ll include a free tasting set while stocks last.
The Selection
This is a line-up for anyone who knows whisky doesn’t stop at the usual borders. A world of whisky, then a tasting set on top. That’s not bad going for one basket.
Australian whisky
Starward Left-Field
70cl • 40% ABV
Product information
Tasting notes
Starward makes whisky in Melbourne, where wine barrels are practically begging to be used in whisky maturation. Left-Field leans into that, with Australian red wine barrels bringing helpings of dried fruit, maple syrup, and baking spice notes. This whisky was designed to enjoyed and Starward encourages mixing and experimentation. Not that we need telling twice.
Nikka From the Barrel
50cl • 51.4% ABV
Product information
Tasting notes
An old favourite around here, in fact we've lost count of the amount of times we've typed its name out. But Nikka From The Barrel delivers time and time again so it has earned its place. It’s punchy, layered, and deeply reliable, with winter spices, dark fruits, caramel, toasted nuts, and enough backbone to work neat, over ice, or in a sublime Highball.
American whiskey
Michter's US*1
Bourbon
70cl • 45.7% ABV
Product information
Tasting notes
Michter’s US*1 Bourbon is Kentucky bourbon doing what Kentucky bourbon should do: creating some very, very drinkable that doesn't break the bank. It’s rich with vanilla, caramel, dried fruit, toasted oak, and baking spice. Sip it neat or mix it into an Old Fashioned. You can't fail with this one.
Indian whisky
Amrut
Single Malt
70cl • 46% ABV
Product information
Tasting notes
Amrut Single Malt helped change the conversation around Indian whisky, and did so by being properly delicious rather than merely interesting. Made from barley and matured in India’s warm climate, it brings honey, allspice, apricot, orange peel, malt, and a lovely rounded richness. A whisky with sunshine in its bones and no time for your preconceptions.
Canadian whisky
Lot 40
Rye
70cl • 43% ABV
Product information
Tasting notes
Lot 40 is Canadian rye for people who actually like rye. Softly floral at first, then cardamom, coriander, vanilla, crunchy brown sugar, pepper, and that lean, spicy grain character that makes bartenders nod approvingly. Superb neat, excellent in a Manhattan, and not remotely interested in being boring.
Whisky, whisky, more whisky!
You could say great whisky is our speciality. In fact, we did say that. And it's worth saying it again.
FREE TASTING SET
Starward Nova
70cl • 41% ABV
Nova is Starward showing off exactly why Australian wine casks make so much sense for whisky. It’s bright, generous, fruity, and full of red berries, toasted oak, spice, and malt sweetness.
FREE TASTING SET
Nikka Taketsuru
70cl • 43% ABV
This blended malt is classic Nikka: poised but not polite to the point of boredom. Expect orchard fruit, toasted malt, gentle smoke, honey, spice, and a clean, elegant finish.
FREE TASTING SET
Michter's US*1 Straight Rye
70cl • 42.4% ABV
Michter’s Rye has that very useful trick of being both serious and dangerously drinkable. There’s rye spice, orange peel, brown sugar, vanilla, herbs, and enough spice to make a Manhattan sing.
