Del Maguey Vida Clásico is a single village mezcal. It’s made alongside the tropical riverbed in the village of San Luis Del Rio, Oaxaca, where the Red Ant River flows. The agave used is 100% Espadin that’s naturally fermented and then twice distilled in wood-fired copper stills. Vida Clásico is bottled at 42%, unblended, in a "time-honoured" 400-year-old way and makes for an ideal introduction to sipping mezcal.
Vida Clásico comes from Del Maguey, a brand created by mezcal legend and pioneer Ron Cooper. While in Mexico the spirit was always appreciated as a key part of the culture, Cooper helped introduce mezcal to a wider audience in an authentic, loving portrayal rather than as a means to exploit its market potential. Appropriately, Del Maguey makes very fine mezcal.
Spicy and smoky nose with hints of light citrus and hazelnut.
Spiced, fruity palate. Smoked almond, a little light peach juice and hints of potpourri and mixed spices.
Tobacco and cinnamon on the tail.
As someone who loves a good Tequila, I had never tried Mezcal before, but was intrigued. Neat, I found it not nice, but after studying how Mexicans drink it, I tried it with a teaspoon of Agave Nectar, and/or some blood orange juice then it was really gorgeous! Smoky like an Islay Whisky, but so many other flavours. Different than Tequila, but well worth it.
Delicious mezcal! Veggie, smokey, complex
My Brother sent this to me as an introduction to good sipping Mescal, it is clean and crisp, tobacco and dried herbs, at first slightly medicinal but a clean finish. Lovely like a young highland whisky.
Being a bar manager and dealing with 100.s of spirits, I can truly say these maguey liquids are indeed the most complex but amazing at the same time. Personally I would not mix this liquid with any other (enough agave out there for cocktails) . Neat is how I would savour this liquid gold. For a full experience I would personally not mix it. Plus expensive cocktail if you are using this liquid,
Clean, crisp and light with dried fruit on the palate, followed by phenolic smoke (not unlike Islay Scotch). There’s some salt and pepper on the finish. Nose is medicinal/phenolic/smoky with candied fruits. Insanely smooth and drinkable neat. Abosutely fantastic stuff.
