A history lesson in a bottle, this is. Combier Roi René Rouge Cherry Liqueur is made to a recipe which was originally created all the way back in 1632. The Combier distillers use hand-picked guignes cherries from France and morello cherries from England to produce the Roi René Rouge, resulting in a light, elegant mouth-feel with heaps of natural sweetness.

I visited the Combier distillery in the Loire Valley and had a tasting. I immediately loved this. As with so many good beers and spirits, it was invented by a holy person. It is utterly delicious, not too sweet, and I've regularly given it as a gift – which people have loved. You could also use it as an elegant drizzle on desserts in the manner of sloe gin and other such liqueurs. I also recommend their triple sec, which was the world's first orange liqueur but Mr Cointreau stole their recipe!
