This year marks two centuries since the Fettercairn Distillery was founded, back in 1824. Sir Alexander Ramsay created one of Scotland’s first licensed distilleries when he bought a corn mill and converted it into a whisky factory as a means to make money off local barley.
A significant and interesting history includes being owned by the family of former Prime Minister William Gladstone, boasting a singular copper cooling ring that cascades water down its stills in a now iconic image, creating a unique Scottish oak maturation project by planting its own forest, and even once being home to a distillery horse named Fergus who was often seen kicking around a football.
Such a story needs to be championed and so we’re celebrating the Highland distillery’s past, present and future through its fantastic range of single malt Scotch whisky, as well as a new competition with BIG PRIZES.

Fettercairn 16 Year Old - 4th Release
For the 2023 bottling, Fettercairn selected whisky aged in a combination of first-fill bourbon casks and Port pipes and then bottled it up at 46.4% ABV.
As these are annual releases, once these editions are gone, that’s it. No more of this liquid, we’re afraid. Each year it’s replaced with the new 16yo expression, you see. Makes you think you should get a bottle while you can…
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Charred pineapple, lavender, dark chocolate, cinnamon, and toasted almonds.
Palate:
Jamaican ginger cake, raspberries, salted caramel, tinned mango, and oak spice.
Finish:
Blackcurrant, vanilla, and nutmeg.

The Past
Fettercairn 40 Year Old Whisky
Fettercairn 40 Year Old takes us back through the history of the distillery in every sip. A major revamp at Fettercairn in 1991 means that much of the equipment this single malt was created with has now gone. It’s a time capsule to a different era, but remains a staggering reminder of the quality this distillery can attain with its brand of exotic fruit-laden, biscuity, aromatic spirit.
Tasting Notes
Nose:
Fragrant vanilla pod gives way to rich sultana and subtle dark chocolate. Sevilla orange zest combines with clove and toasted oak.
Palate:
Cinnamon and ginger spice complement dark forest fruits with a subtle hint of aniseed. Notes of baked apple lead to stewed raisins with a faint herbal influence.
Finish:
Full and long with lasting summer berries and citrus.
