What is a worm tub?
A worm tub is a traditional way of condensing spirit vapour back into liquid during distillation. Instead of modern shell-and-tube condensers, it uses a long coiled copper pipe, the “worm”, submerged in a tank of cold water. Hot vapour leaves the still, travels through the coil, cools down, and turns back into liquid spirit.
Most modern distilleries use condensers that maximise copper contact to strip out heavier compounds. This gives you a lighter, cleaner spirit. Worm tubs do the opposite. Because the vapour has less contact with copper, more sulphury, meaty, and weighty compounds make it through into the spirit. The result is a fuller, oilier, often slightly funky profile.
