A. van Wees de Ooievaar is a pillar of heritage, tradition, and distillation in Dutch spirit culture. It is the last remaining distillery in Amsterdam. Today, its genevers and spirits show generations of craftsmanship since 1782.
At the heart of the range is genever, a gin precursor with deep roots in the Dutch tradition. Unlike dry gins, genever has a maltier taste. It's made from malt wine distilled from grains, then redistilled with botanicals. The blend of grain and botanicals offers a rich yet delicate flavour.
The distillery's genevers, both old (oude) and young (jonge), are well-known. The 'oude' has a strong malt taste and slight sweetness, while the 'jonge' is lighter with more juniper, similar to modern gin.
A. van Wees de Ooievaar also makes other spirits and liqueurs. Their fruit brandies and herbal bitters reflect their attention to detail.
Their liqueurs, based on historic recipes, echo Amsterdam's history as a trade centre. These liqueurs offer a taste of the city's past and a range of rich flavours.
The distillery is still family-run, committed to traditional methods. They carefully oversee every step, from fermentation to distillation and maturation. This ensures their spirits' authenticity and quality.
