Burns Night Whisky
Do Burns Night best with Master of Malt
25 January is the birthday of the great Scottish poet Robert Burns. On this date, people around the world celebrate his legacy with an extravagant affair of food, music and malt.
Burns Night might not officially be a whisky holiday, but like St. Patrick’s Day, it becomes a celebration of the spirit through its joyous Celtic roots. Even more so because the man himself loved a drop of the good stuff.
There’s really no way to celebrate Burns Night without a good glass of Scotch whisky in hand. It’s what the man would have wanted. Others will help you sort the haggis and kilt for the big day, but nobody has a better selection of Scotch whisky for Burns Night 2025 than we have.
If you want to do Burns Night right then you’re in the right place. We’ve got everything you need to make this year the best yet, including the only annual Burns Night Poetry Competition that rewards you with Scotch whisky. The 2025 edition is now open for entries!
Embrace the wild and rugged Meikle Tòir
Meikle Tòir The Sherry One
One for fans of smoke and sherry. Meikle Tòir The Sherry One is peated using mainland peat from St. Fergus to 35ppm and benefited from a lengthy fermentation period of 160 hours. It’s fruity and complex enough to stand up to ageing in Pedro Ximénez and oloroso sherry puncheons following an initial maturation in American oak bourbon barrels.
Nose
Coffee, cedar, salted caramel, stewed plums, marmalade, and cigar box aromas join the sweet smokiness of the mainland peat.
Palate
Dark chocolate, butterscotch, orange peel, dates, blackcurrant compote, and burnt treacle.
Finish
Mocha and dark fruit.

Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old
Few words can be said about Bunnahabhain 18 Year Old that will do it any real justice. This is one of the masterful drams you need to sip to understand. Chip in with a few mates and give your Burns Night something special.
Nose:
Salted caramel leads to sticky toffee pudding sprinkled with nutmeg. With time a leathery quality emerges.
Palate:
Dense, rich sherried notes perked up with a coastal saltiness. On a second wave roast chestnuts emerge and gentle wood spice.
Finish:
Woodspice becomes mixed spice. The finish is warming and lengthy; salt and sherry towards the very end.
Laphroaig 10 Sherry Oak
Smoke and sherry are a match made in heaven when done right and that’s what we have here, a superb blend of big flavours that will help cut through the richest of haggis dinners. Laphroaig 10 Year Old Sherry Oak Finish is a winner for those who like whisky bold.
Nose:
Smoked meats, maple syrup, BBQ lemon, charred oak, and a smidge of coffee.
Palate:
More roasted cedar and peat smoke, with a hint of iodine tucked away. Dark chocolate, honey, and vanilla pod.
Finish:
A balanced finish of sherried sweetness and smouldering peat.
Cutty Sark Prohibition
Cutty Sark's Prohibition Edition blended Scotch whisky is perhaps the ultimate cocktail weapon for a good whisky bartender. It’s got strength and character, but also balance enough to play well with other ingredients without getting lost in the mix. Ideal for Burns Night cocktails.
Nose:
There are custard notes familiar from the 40% ABV expression, though now paired with more citrus, pear and fudge cubes you get in seaside sweet shops.
Palate:
Toffee chunks with a little bit of dark chocolate hidden inside. A touch of grassy malt and crushed nuts.
Finish:
A final hint of caramel and golden malt.
Timorous Beastie
Douglas Laing's Timorous Beastie is a blended malt made entirely of Highland whiskies from distilleries such as Dalmore, Glen Garioch, Glengoyne and more. The name is, of course, a nod to the mouse in the poem 'To a Mouse'. A whisky named after a Burns character seems particularly fitting, doesn’t it?
Nose:
Acacia honey, creamy boiled sweeties (the strawberry flavour), dried apricots and white grapes. There's a good whack of Sherry influence in here too! A whiff of coastal air and classic Highland heather, too.
Palate:
Dried fruits, green apples and anise. Sweet grist and malt loaf. Pebble beaches and more heather on the mid-palate.
Finish:
Long. Drying with hot cinnamon sweeties and fresh bread.
Lagavulin Distillers 2022
Get your lips around a powerful dram of Lagavulin and you’ll know the kind of excellence Scotland can produce before you’ve even considered the legacy of Burns. The 2022 Distillers Edition was matured in Pedro Ximénez seasoned American oak casks to complement the whisky’s coastal smoke with sweet fruit.
Nose:
Large helpings of peat are joined by dried fruit, raisins, and some vanilla sweetness.
Palate:
Coastal smoke, with some salted toffee, and more sherry character.
Finish:
Oaky spices linger, with lingering peat.
Arran Robert Burns
A single malt from the Isle of Arran distillery, celebrating the man of the hour. In fact, this Scotch whisky is officially endorsed by the World Burns Federation. It even has his picture on it. This makes a great gift for your Scottish pal. Make a note.
Nose:
Apple peels, a little pear juice, hints of coconut and apple blossom. Develops with custard and cinnamon.
Palate:
Fruity and rich, vanilla, pannacotta, apple and lime peel.
Finish:
Apple strudel and cinnamon on the finish.

A taste of hope for summer in the depths of winter. Fruity and flavoursome, lemongrass, grapefruit, and fresh turmeric. Almost invigorating. Superb citrus and vineyard peaches.
