If you love Bordeaux or a posh Californian cabernet but don't want to spend a lot of money then Chile is your best bet. This comes from from Colchagua Valley just south of the capital, Santiago. It's made from 70% cabernet and 30% Carmenère, and spends around 10 months in French oak barrels, with 40% new, which gives this wine a dusting of spice. Now nearly 10 years old, it's beautifully mellow with soft tannins. This would be perfect for Sunday lunch with roast lamb.
Ripe plum and blackcurrant with all kinds of spices like cinnamon, vanilla and clove plus aromatic tobacco notes on the finish.
