It's finally here - the Woodford Reserve Double Oaked Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey. This expression begins life being aged in the same way as the classic Woodford Reserve, but following this, it is further matured in barrels which have been heavily toasted and lightly charred. This imparts an added depth of sweet oaken character to the whiskey, as well as developing the fruit, vanilla and caramel notes.
Black cherries, toffee, dark chocolate, honey and toasted almonds.
Rich and full with notes of baked apples, cinnamon, cloves and caramel.
Creamy and smooth with vanilla and baking spices.
I have just had a bottle delivered to my door as a thank you from a client! What a lovely surprise. By coincidence, I had bought a bottle of the regular Woodford Reserve at the weekend so I was able to compare the colour in-bottle. The double oaked version is appreciably darker - obviously as it has spent more time in the barrel. What is remarkable is the nose - instead of getting it straight into the mouth (I know, it’s tempting) just try nosing this like a wine. Leather, oak and spice - it’s all there. I don’t nose many bourbons but this is definitely worth it. In the mouth it is dark, soft with a long golden moscovado finish. A lovely bourbon and, indeed, a lovely thank you present from my clients, bless their American hearts ?!
Let me just say i have waited sooooo long for a taste of the Woodford double oaked goodness and i wasn’t disappointed, so many notes to describe, i will continue to fund Woodfords bank account for this goodness
Bourbon tends to be distilled more often than whisky and so tends to be smoother at the expense of flavour, however this one has the perfect balance and comes highly recommended... Plus its bourbon so you won't feel so bad if you mix it into your coffee! ?
I am far from a bourbon expert - having just decided to become a bourbon and rum snob about 8 months ago. But of the dozen or so bourbons I've tried, including the regular Woodford Reserve, this one suits me best. I haven't tried Elijah Craig Toasted Barrel yet, but I imagine this is similar. I like the sweeter, more honey-like flavor that comes with the second barrel-aging (similar to my favorite aged rum). I liked the standard Woodbridge Reserve very much, before trying the double-oak. Now, the standard version seems too watered-down by comparison.
