Buffalo Trace's stunning bourbon William Larue Weller, named after the man famed for being the first to create "wheated bourbon", in which the spicy rye grain is substituted for wheat in the mashbill. The result is a smooth, supple little sippin' whiskey.
Oily and rich. Marzipan, cereals, vanilla spice.
Oaked. Spice, perfumy, toasty.
Quite sweet, oaky, cereal rich.
Drinks like a fine brandy, forget the ice.
Wonderful bourbon, beautifully sweet and extremely well balanced, there's a lot to be said for wheated bourbon.
My understanding is that the people from Pappy Van Winkle recently confirmed that the 12yr old Weller is the same juice as the Van Winkle Lot B 12 year old. Check pricing on both and you'll find a significant difference. I've just purchased a bottle of the Weller and am interested to see if it tastes the same. The Van Winkle 12 yr is a phenomenal bourbon so if Weller is indeed the same nectar, I'm their newest fan. Cheers Pete
I can't claim to be an expert but I am swept away by this whiskey, smooth tastey and a long way away from the aggressive bourbons I've had before. Almost akin to Calvados. Wonderful discovery. I'm surprise that there aren't more reviews form more accomplished sippers than me.
Makes a mean old fashioned
