Wild Turkey's Rare Breed Bourbons are bottled at cask strength, and are often absolutely staggering stuff. The bottles have had a little redesign recently, and look very stylish indeed - though the eponymous turkey on the label looks rather surprised to be there. This particular edition was bottled at 58.4% ABV.
Buttery at first, before a big rush of clove and oak.
Heavy caramel and chocolate. A touch of smoke develops, it's almost a bit vegetal at points too.
Menthol, cut herbs, brown sugar and white pepper.
Nose: Spice laden. Clove, cinnamon, nutmeg and turmeric. Sweet vanilla, classic to bourbon, and a little minty note. Quite rich, and intense. You know what it's like? Smelling an empty glass, that recently held bourbon. Palate: That spice carried over. Freshly cracked black pepper at the forefront, bitter, charred oak followed by a good old whack of caramel, leading to more vanilla, with a chocolate and honey note at the end. Finish: Weird for bourbon. A vegetal note, but it manifests itself as a rubber note. A little unpleasant but nothing too bad. Toffee, thankfully, overtakes this rubber note, and the sip ends with a pronounced sweetness.
Well I must have a duff bottle.. while recently visiting a friend in the US last week offer me a sample and it was as others say lovely he also on other recommendations found an export none filtered version and that was unbelievable so when back on the UK, I bought at bottle to celebrate the coronation.. ABSOLUTELY AWFUL and such a disappointment.. thankfully have a bottle of 101 from Tescos which was substantially better!!!!!
Absolutely delicious as it comes but a couple of reviews I've seen recently compare it against the non-chill filtered version, which supposedly is only available in export markets (that includes us, right?) Predictably, lack of NCF produces a bourbon with greater viscosity, more flavour and overall complexity. Fingers crossed it's available on our shores some time soon.
This is wonderful. One of the most impressive noses I’ve ever dangled over, a rich full taste of smooth chocolately deliciousness, and a finish as long as a slide guitar blues riff. This is the taste of America.
Holy mother of Turkey! Smoother than bond charming money penny, tastier than Carol Smiley: this bourbon will make you feel loved like only your mum can while teasing you how your first love did. Buy it.
