This bottling of Wild Turkey has been aged for at least six years before coming out of the barrel at 109 proof. The whiskey is only diluted slightly before bottling at 101 proof with plenty of pep.
The nose is quite subdued, yet there remains a beautiful toffeyed sweetness. Notes of toasty oak and melted vanilla ice cream, a touch of zesty citrus and butterscotch. The palate is full and rich with notes of cigar box sweetness, pepper, caramel, or ‘carmel’ should I say? Notes of honey on granary toast with a little melted butter. The finish is long and rich with spice and toast notes.
In my opinion, if you are a bourbon fan, I do not think you can go wrong with 101. You can find marginally better bourbons but not close to the bargain price of 101.
As someone who is a bit of a single malt snob, it takes a lot from a North American spirit to impressive me. Wild Turkey blew my expectations out of the water. First of the nose would not suggest a 101 proof spirit bottled at 50.5 abv. You get apple, apricots, toffee and a rich yet balanced corn malt. On the palate it is buttery smooth, with a hint of sweetness and a brilliant bold body. The finish is smooth, and there is no alcohol burn or heat. This is pure magic. Do yourself a favour and get a bottle of Wild Turkey 101, you will not regret it.
Wonderful smooth drink full of flavour
As in "Damn! This is a great bourbon!" Took a couple of stabs at it for me to really come to like it, but now that I do, I REALLY do! It's one of my favorite whiskeys of any type. Vanilla, butterscotch & just slight oaky heat.
Best bang for your buck bourbon period, I recommend adding half tea spoon of water as it really is makes this whisky shine, a must have in everyone's collection.
