A gentle 10 year old from the Speyside distillery, Tomintoul, matured exclusively in American oak bourbon barrels. Tomintoul 10 Year Old was introduced to the range in 2002, two years after the distillery was bought by Angus Dundee, and has been awarded gold medals for its taste by some of the most prestigious spirits competitions in the world.
Medium-body and well-balanced. There are notes of vanilla fudge and barley. Tones of malt extract and espresso, hints of mochaccino and oak.
Pleasingly viscous, with notes of barley sugar, toasty cereals, acacia honey and malt extract. Honeycomb, toffee and a touch of vanilla fudge.
Quite short, yet charming.
Very nice, honey and flora. Young but smooth and extremely good value at this money indeed. Excellent starter whiskey!
Best I’ve tasted in a long time
OK, here's the thing. I like it as it is, straight. Lovely whisky for the price. Right up my alley. But if I mix it 50-50 with Aberfeldy, this combination is absolutely gorgeous for my taste buds..! Sorry lads...
I intend to try every distillery's product that I can, so no regrets. This is light and clean, malty and fruity. No youthful harshness, just mellowness. Would've been nice to try this at 46% without colorant and non-chill filtered. But as a repeat customer, for the price, I would choose the following malts over this one every time (in order of price as available to me): Speyburn 10, Old Pulteney 12, Glenlivet 12, Glenmorangie 10. They all offer a bit more bite and substance while being quite similar in profile. OP12 tastes a bit older than its age and Glenmo10 offers a bit more complexity. The only negative about this malt is that it's too smooth and too mellow. That might be exactly what some people want. I'll have to explore the "pastry chef's whisky" notion mentioned below.
Soft, gentle, sweet, young Speyside. If you enjoy the style, step up to the 12 year old sherried expression ...same soft whisky, with a little more punch in the flavours. Ian
