    The Sexton Single Malt

The creation of master blender Alex Thomas, The Sexton Single Malt Irish whiskey is made from 100% Irish malted barley, triple distilled in copper pot stills. After, the liquid is aged in Spanish Oloroso sherry casks imparting a rich and fruity character. It comes in a rather eye-catching hexagonal bottle, too.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Rich aromas of nuts, marzipan and dark chocolate with a pinch of spice.

    Palate

Dried fruit followed by honeycomb sweetness, apricots, lemon zest, prunes and oak spice.

    Finish

Woody on the finish, with honeyed sweetness coming through.

    If you like bourbon ......

Thought I'd give this a go, if only because the bottle is a thing of beauty. It isn't an offensive whiskey, but I'm not getting the layers and finish that I'd normally appreciate. I'm generally a Speyside fan and this is really as far removed from this as it can be. For a single malt it tastes a lot like a cheaper blended whiskey, not what I was expecting at all. If I had to make a comparison I find it to be in the vicinity of a cheaper American bourbon, good for drinking on a night out.

Most “Scotch-like” Irish whiskey I’ve tried

This one is interesting. If I would try it blind, I would probably never guess it’s an Irish whiskey. Not what I’m used to from an Irish. Reminds me of a mix of Aberfeldy 12 and brandy. Notes of honey, walnuts, almonds and grapes.

    The Best Irish Whiskey

I resisted buying this whiskey for at least 9 months after first seeing it because I thought that the name Sexton was a cynical exploitation of the reputation of Jonny Sexton, Leinster and Ireland rugby legend. I bought a bottle eventually to have to hand during the last Rugby World Cup in France in 2023. My first sip was a revelation. It is the only whiskey which I drink neat, like cognac. Utterly delicious and a consolation when Ireland went out in the quarter-finals. Well done, Bushmills!
