A tasty blended Japanese whisky here, Tanjaku is made with corn and barley, and aged in American white oak bourbon barrels. The Japanese characters you can spot on the label translate to "hibari", more commonly known as the skylark. We reckon a Highball will showcase this one very well!
Nose: A faint suggestion of smoke with pear blossom and plump sultana.
Palate: Tinned pears on the palate, with banana bread and thick custard.
Finish: Creamy oak spice and a floral elderflower finish.

I didn't think much of this when I first opened it. Initially a bit raw. I tried a dram and put the bottle back on the shelf. A couple of days later, having given it a bit of a shake it had improved a whole lot with a bit of air. Let it breathe. Let it develop a bit. After that, I liked it. Good value for the money. I don't know if anybody else does this, but I find that many blends benefit from a good shake once opened to get some air into them.

If you want a Japanese mixer, go with Suntory Toki, leaps better to this. This has a similar nose to Toki with the apple note but it doesn't have the crispness/floral character that Toki has. Barely peat on the nose, less than say Nikka FTB. The palate is... barely present. Flat, grain alcohol, nut. It goes down well enough but there's essentially no flavour whatsoever. Toki, while young and bright and best in a highball, it still is more palatable and actually has something going on, this is incredibly boring. If you're unfortunate enough to buy/receive this one, highball it.Also, I was told that apparently while the whisky is blended in Japan, the grain is not sourced from Japan, so questionable whether one can call this a Japanese whisky to begin with.

It's disgusting.

I would say this is value for money, but a raw finish - as you would expect.

Smells fragrant with creamy caramel and banana. Taste is mellow with banana slightly dominant. Medium yet fairly harsh finish. Easy enough to drink but there's much better blended scotch and bourbon available at the price.
