Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire 10 Year Old

This right here is a 10-year-old single malt from an undisclosed distillery on Islay, with 25% of it having been finished in first-fill oloroso sherry casks, and bestowed the decidedly descriptive name Seaweed & Aeons & Digging & Fire. If those four words (and three ampersands) aren't quite enough of an explanation of what this expression is all about, here are a few more: stripped-back, smoky, complex, a bit sherried, balanced, coastal. Yeah, that should do it. Great for people who love uncompromising Islay whisky and sans-serif fonts.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Rich, powerful sherry with a well-integrated core of peat. Solid.

    Palate

Well-balanced but extremely forceful on delivery. The sherry makes itself known in a really good way.

    Finish

Red apple sweetness gives way to oaken-vanilla goodness and fades elegantly into the embers of a chargrilled well-aged steak.

    Overall

A thoroughly impressive dram. One would be forgiven for mistaking it for an OB with another 5 years of age on it.

Seaweed and Aeons Digging & Fire

Not nice - either ordered in error or picked by mistake, whatever, what I really wanted was the Maple Syrup and Oats version. Now, that really is a lovely dram.

Seaweed and Aeons Digging & Fire

Not the nicest, if fact quite disappointing. Either I ordered it by mistake or it got picked in error - either way what I had intended buying was their Maple syrup and Oats version - now that really is a lovely dram.

Fine Islay whisky. Taste a bit short lasting

My immediate impression on first tasting was Wow!! A real Islay whisky. Beautifully balanced. Maybe a bit sherried for some, not like the original medicinal Laphraoig or the original rough tough Cuillin-flavoured aggressiveness of the Talisker of my youth (yes I know that's from another island, but still...), but still pleasantly challenging. I preferred this to the more fully sherried version which is too soft for my taste. The comment on the flavour being too short lasting is one I agree with. Climbing a Cuillin takes hours. Climbing Beinn Bheigeir is much easier, a long pleasant stroll. The same is true of the best (to my taste) of their whiskies. Nevertheless I have ordered another bottle, and I don't say that of every whisky I try, not by any means.

    A tad disappointed

I had a 3cl sample as part of a pour and sip box. Initially a good hit of sherry and smoke, but the flavour dissipated almost immediately for me. I have been stalking this for a while, so whilst perfectly drinkable, for me it was a little disappointing. By no means a bad whisky, just not one I will be getting a full bottle of.
