Rye whiskey has a long ol' history in the USA, with a few places in particular singled out in rye's journey, including Kentucky, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. The Maryland-style of rye has struggled on the verge of extinction in recent decades, but Sagamore Spirit is one of a few producers choosing to make this sweeter style of rye. The Signature Rye is made with a sourced combination of two rye whiskeys from Indiana, brought down to bottling strength with limestone-filtered water from Sagamore Farm. Not quite a dry and spicy as the rye whiskeys that you may be familiar with, but it offers up a lip-smacking sweetness that makes for easy sipping, and works great in cocktails.
Honeyed grains, milky coffee, cinnamon gum and a soft hint of peppery oak.
Chewy dates and candied peels, with pistachio ice cream and nutmeg to follow.
Lasting vanilla, a hint of drying cedar and more honey.
Coming out of dry January, I have heard a lot about this whiskey and I bought a bottle to be my first dram coming out of sobriety. It did not disappoint. I'm impressed with the flavor for a lower ABV. If you like high ABVs stay away, if you like whiskeys with lower ABV and you palette that can appreciate them this a great rye to have on your back bar.
I confess I'm not an American whiskey drinker normally, preferring to Scottish malts, but Masters of Malt's Whisky Santa offered me free sample dram as with my pre-Christmas order and this is what turned up. "Oh dear", I thought, "I'm going to be disappointed" but how wrong I was. For a start it's got a pleasant nose and in the mouth it's sweet and slightly sticky but the finish is what really makes it. It's fruity and I think it's closest to watermelon ... although not quite, and there's something else there too but overall a great explosion of flavour. I was impressed and a bottle is now in my shopping basket ready for when I place my next order.
A very nice Rye with flavours of milky caramel, candied walnuts, creamy vanilla and oak spice, however can only award it 3 stars as it is underproofed and there is better alternatives at lower price points.
This Rye has a 96 expert rating and it's easy to see why. It's an excellent value. Rich, deep caramel and vanilla flavors. This is one to sip and savor. Long finish.
My dad used to talk about Monongahela Rye and Maryland Rye as some of the best American Whisky. After having this I can see why. Very smooth.
