This 17 year old from the Pulteney distillery was a double gold winner at the 2006 San Francisco World Spirits Competition, matured in Spanish Oloroso and Pedro Ximenez casks.
These bottles were part of a private collection - if you'd like more detailed photos just get in touch!
The nose is clean and fresh with great balance. There is a profusion of fruit, from fruit salad with honeydew melon and pear to dried fruits, sultanas in a hot cross bun, fresh from the oven, a lightly salted butter melts over it with notes of fudge and a hint of something vaguely green. There is a lovely creaminess to the nose with notes of soft whirling smoke and crème fraîche. The palate is quite full and very sweet with sugared citrus peels and toffee. There are some notes of beeswax and honeycomb and fudge rises with malted barley and cereal sweetness. The finish is long with a herbal edge and a chewy oak.
Nose: first coconut, then hints of lemon sweetened with fudge and raisins. Taste: soft creamy delicious sweet dried fruits, a little spice going on, wanted it to last nearly couldn't bring myself to swallow. Finish: Long lingering slightly herbal way at the back but strengthening the longer I waited before tasting again.
This is the best whisky I've ever had. Even better than the magnificent 21 year old, in my opinion. It's a tad hard to get, but compared to spirits of the same quality, way underpriced. I really hope that's not the next $600 legend whisky, but judging by its taste it may well be.
This might become a mythical whisky in a couple a years time. One of the best drams period. I have over 200 single malts in my collection. If I was to pick one, as my last dram this would be it over several more expensive drams in my collection. I am so sad that it is discontinued.
Every once is a while l get lucky. With the inventory of OP 17 drying up out there, l have been really lucky to find 8 bottles at the clearance price of $ 103.98 Canadian. Thank You to the NSLC for not knowing what they had. This is great scotch, sorry to see it go away....
One word sums this bottling up... WOW! I thought the 12 was dam good... but this is punching well above it’s price tag! If you want Scotland in a bottle, this is it! You can keep your Islay’s!
