Penderyn Legend is a Welsh single malt whisky firstly matured in bourbon barrels and finished in ex-Madeira casks before it's bottled, imparting an intriguing touch of vibrant sweetness. It has been bottled at 41% ABV, slightly lower than the Welsh distillers' other Madeira-cask-finished single malt.
I bought this because I was curious and it was on offer. It didn't blow me away but it has definitely grown on me. I would buy again .. when on offer ... an easy drinker ..
It needs a dribble of water to loosen up the flavours and take away some of the initial harshness but after that it's sweet, light and chrisp. I'm not sure I'd be happy if I paid £30 for it but it's often on sale and worth a punt if you find it on offer.
I'm a particular fan of Madeira cask finishes, perhaps the best I've had was the Balvenie 17 Year Old release from 2009, this doesn't quite compare with that but it does come close to the later 21 Year Old bottling from Balvenie at less than 1/4 of the price at time of writing. The nose is full of fruits and sweet spices but the first hit on the palate is very light - I can understand the other reviews calling it bland. However, this is just the initial impact and I find it quite refreshing for such a fruit heavy whisky not to bowl you over right away, the flavour developes brilliantly as it moves across the tongue with a sweet citrus morphing into apples and almost a hint of cinnamon. Finally it leaves you with the warm sultana finish characteristic of madeira cask whiskies. For its price it is an excellent whisky, almost a 4.5 but to earn that I'll need to be convinced of the consistency with a second bottle.
Not great. Very strong on the throat even with a drop of water. The taste after that lingers is nice but the initial hit is hot, fiery and bland. Not for me I'm afraid.
Fabulous stuff been a whiskey man all my life now at 68 have all the years of tasting to draw from .This legend is just that ,I have found it in a Welsh bottle. Truly THE LAST WORD FOR ME
