Pappy Van Winkle 20

Incredibly old for a bourbon, this bottling of Pappy Van Winkle’s Family Reserve was aged for 20 years and retains a beautiful sweetness, a perfect digestif whiskey.

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

Nose Stewed fruits on the nose, sweet spices, oiliness, white chocolate, walnut.

Palate Rich, soft and sweet oak with custard. The mouthfeel is like silk, and Preston Van Winkle likens this to a classic Cognac, and we reckon he’s onto something. The maturity, smooth/oily feel of this on the tongue, coupled with musty fruitiness sum up what we love about a decent XO, this is sublime.

Finish Good length, with hints of honeycomb, peppery spices and prune.

Overall Heaven!

Reviews for Pappy Van Winkle's Family Reserve Bourbon 20 Year Old
Excellent but not worth the secondary market price.
I am only 22, but I have tried a lot of different whiskeys over the past year. I am primarily into scotch, but I saw the 15 year at a bar a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Today, I was lucky enough to find the 20 year stocked at a local restaurant, and it is probably my favorite whiskey that I have had up to this point. In spite of being in love with this stuff, I believe that the price point on the secondary market is far too high.

Glenmorangie and Knob Creek DO NOT equal this goodness
This was quite the stuff. Amazing. The guy below who said he thought Knob creek was better had immature pallet and the guy who said Glenmorangie over this needs his nationalistic head examined. I agree the price is too much and I personally found the 15 better but it was still an amazing dram.

Glenmorangie= better than this? No way. Sounds like some stupid Scot or Brit just wanted to shit on something he was ashamed he couldn't understand. Compare this to a Royal Salute 36 or Ledaig 42.

If you have money to spare...buy. If not...Invest in the 15 or a bottle of Kentucky Owl.

The bottle and bag it is in is beautiful
My wife or I drink but have a bottle of the 20 year and I am shocked at some of the prices I see out there for it. Must be awesome stuff.

Oh well...
It's amazing... I just wish the hipsters hadn't spilled the beans to the wealthy and driven the price up more than ten fold! I used to regularly buy this when it was 80-100 per bottle. I've seen it as high as nearly 3k... for the same stuff!! Oh well... supply and demand.

20 years well spent.
I am 53 years old and had the pleasure of trying Pappy Van Winkle for the first time.(and likely the last) Few things I have put in my mouth, that has moved me to talk about it, this __ is the first time I felt the need to write.

Find Pappy 20 bottled in 2012 or earlier.....
The newer Pappy's are definitely not as good as the older 100% Stitzel bottlings. Any bottle that contains bourbon from after 1992 is a blend with the remaining stitzel stock and aged buffalo trace stock. While they tried to replicate the bourbon as best they could (prices would seem to suggest so at least), it will be a let down to anyone who is shelling out big bucks. That said, I continue to put my name on about 100 retailers lists every year in case they get some and willing to pay MSRP (which is about $120 for 20 y/o).

Not as good as the 2013
I had a bottle of this back in 2013, and I remember it being higher proof. Maybe I'm wrong, but it was more bombastic, and also a little less predictable. This year's is amazing, however, despite being less of a sophisticate than this year's. I miss the "model airplane glue" not in the old Schtizel juice. This year's release has notes of bees' wax, molasses, mint, caramel, and marshmallow nougat, but with less cinnamon than in the 15. I found it a bit weak in terms of the proof. It's too bad it wasn't up around 100 proof. It would have been so much better that way.
