My favorite! None like it!
Seems to me that this is a bit of a polarizing whiskey. I know some people that think Old Grand Dad is crap and some others that swear by it. I tried this a few different ways...neat, a few drops of water, with stones, without stones and on the rocks. Overall, it’s a decent whiskey for the price, with the operative word being decent. Even at its price, I feel that there are others out there that give Old Grand-Dad a run for its money. To me, the name is misleading as I think that instead of what my grandad would drink, that it tastes like what the old “cowboy whiskeys” from the western movies would taste like. The nose is mostly cinnamon with some cereal/barley, a touch of caramel and maybe faint wood in there. Mouth is mostly cinnamon, some barley and some caramel that quickly turns astringent and burns with some pepper into the finish. In my opinion, the best way to drink it is whiskey stones with a few drops of water, it provides the best taste. Neat had too much burn for me. On the rocks initially made it taste more buttery and creamy but then quickly drowned it, although I will say it took the burn off. In summary, it’s decent and affordable so I can see how others like it but for that price, but there are others out there that are better, Evan Williams in particular.
love this stuff and pretty cheap although the bottle I bought in Canada was closer to 50% I think
Smooth and a great price
This is indeed an interesting whiskey and a great deal at $20.00. A little hot at first, but really splendid and smooth in length. A sipping whiskey, not a mixer (in my opinion). Vanilla, honey, some wood, some banana, a touch of citrus. If you can find anything this good within $10, please let us know.
