A new edition of Nikka's Taketsuru Pure Malt, released in 2020! It features a new recipe, showing off the excellent balance of the Japanese whisky, alongside wafts of smoke and waves of creamy malt. The name is a reference to Nikka's founder, Masataka Taketsuru, who established Nikka all the way back in 1934!
Grassy malt, earthy vanilla, toasted coconut and BBQ pineapple.
More vanilla, subtly floral at points. Salted butter on toasted teacakes, ripe pear and peach.
Lingering peat smoke and subtle baking spice warmth.
Fruity (think more like orange and citrus), sweet and oily. Quite smooth on the palate, the finish is on the dry side, though the vanilla scent lingers for a bit. Though not exceptional, it's solid. 4.1/5 for me
Nose: vanilla, beer? pineapple? 18/25 Taste: vanilla, caramel, hint of fruit? minimal. 20/25 Finish: Aftertaste similar to the smell of beer, with a hint of pineapple and flowers? 22/25 Overall: Pineapple beer?, very drinkable, strange flavor and nose 22/25 Total: 82/100 first off, on the nose, pineapple dosn't belong in anything other than maybe marzipan cake, but this just smells, strange, like someone tried to make a pineapple vanilla.. beer? initial taste is very minimal, finish is odd, beer and pineapple leaves me confused? confused is good, that means there's something here to learn, but pineapple bad universally, marked down primarily for my dislike of pineapple. I think I need a bottle of this to figure it out better. Very drinkable, at least this 30ml sample is. Drop of water: pineapple beer gone, more wooden and floral? better this way but less interesting.
I don't like to talk down a whisky, but this is retailing at £60 and it's possibly my least favourite whisky after close to 10 years of drinking whisky. Like a very concentrated lager, very acquired taste.
