Part of a trio of expressions announced in 2018 (which also included a 12 Year Old and a 20 Year Old), this 16 year old Mortlach single malt is drawn from sherry casks - the rich sweetness complements the intense spirit that the distillery is known for. Expect dark fruit, treacle and punchy Christmas spice notes from this one...
Gingersnaps and orange peel, with hints of roast chestnut, apple and blackcurrant pie and quince.
Mature oak from the outset, joined by prune, clove, macadamia nut and a slight touch of baked earth.
Lingering oily walnut and chewy raisin notes. More ginger appears later on.

The first dram when I opened the bottle was underwhelming. Tasted thin, black tea like. Hardly anything from the nose. But is a much different story after bottle is opened for 2 weeks! Taste just the right sweetness, stevia type of sweetness with herbs, and finish is very long. Still has the tea like and melon fruity character and dryness which makes it complex. Balance with no bitterness. After my first dram I told myself I won’t buy this again... but now, I will make this a regular on my shelf!
The first sip was rather underwhelming.. thin mouthfeel.. is like drinking tea with some cucumber aftertaste. At the end of my glass, as the flavour build up, the prominent taste is spicy, lots of tanin from the oak, and savoury. It is not the typical sweet and honey-floral whisky. Is complex... but i wont call it rich. Quite friendly.
Nose, brought me back to riding bareback on a pony a drizzling autumn day in an oak and moss forest. Palate, full whipped cream with honey and cinnamon (I added some water to this one). Finish, black pepper, clove and blackberries. Overall a very nice surprise!
Now your talking and this dram fairly talks volumes too . It has it all . Even the SHEXY bottle is a winner . I opened it at 6pm on a friday night with my neghbour up the track here in the highlands . By 9pm thete was 3 drams left in the bottle . It just keeps talking away to you . Awoke as bright as new pin the next day . That next night I savored the last 3 drama myself . Amazing. It has to be right up there with some of greats. .5 stars short of perfect because I have still many more drams to try .
Complex and rich flavor.
