The first line extension to the Maker's Mark range since the '50s, Maker's 46 is essentially the standard expression with added spice. This bourbon was not intended to compete with the core expression, instead it's a cousin to it, something different for those that like spicy whisk(e)y. They add this extra dimension by inserting seared French oak staves into the barrels (with the stave profile "number 46" - thus the name). It's utterly stunning.
Toffee sweetness and the saw dust from freshly cut wood. Has a very toasty aroma, with sweet spices and deep, thick caramel.
Creamy and very soft. Then it opens up, in fact it explodes with spiciness which concentrates on the tip of the tongue. It’s on nutmeg, mulled wine spices, allspice, cinnamon. Also a hint of hot apple juice.
A natural progression of the palate with the sweet spices and it concentrates on the tongue – this may be one of the few times you’ll notice a concentration of sweetness like this from a bourbon. It also becomes grassy after a minute or so.
I was recommended this by a friend, never having tried Makers Mark. This is now a regular favourite. It starts smooth & creamy, then gives you a little warmth & a hint of spice. If your a bourbon newbie (as I am) you must try this one.
Absolutely smashing. Finished the bottle tonight. Very tasty. Now I'll need to go buy more.
Best Wheater Bourbon at this price point, Smooth, buttery, sweet, vanilla
My wife bought me a bottle of 46 yesterday (15/08), for our 25th Anniversary. I really like their original Maker's Mark bourbon , so the bar was already set high for the 46 to live up to. And it does, everything from the smell of the whisky when you open the bottle, to the great taste and smoothness when drank neat it's all there. This would make a beautiful present for anyone who enjoys a good bourbon or whisky, defiantly one for the collection.
Usually prefer Islay, tried a Woodford Reserve yesterday, very sweet and had that JD and coke flavour going off which isn't my thing. Glad I went for this, little sweetness, followed by a gentle warming spice, smooth and complex for a bourbon. Tasty everyday drink. Moorish.
