Maker's Mark is a world-famous bourbon whisky produced in Loretto, Kentucky. The brand is known for its red wax seal, which is said to be applied by hand to each bottle.
A brilliant whisky (note: Maker's Mark is one of just a few distilleries in the US to spell whisky sans the "e"!) it is made to a mashbill first developed by Bill Samuels Sr, which uses red winter wheat instead of rye. The result, therefore, can be described as a "wheated bourbon", and it's all the more smooth and creamy because of it!
Fruity and rich. There are lovely notes of spiced honey and mixed peels, a little malmsey, hazelnut and a touch of cut fruit with toasty oak providing a backbone.
Rich and full. There are notes of rye and spice, barley malt, a little nut oil with butterscotch and vanilla.
Quite sweet with butterscotch and dry oak spice.
Makers Mark is always in my cupboard. The design of the bottle and a wax top makes it look posh and can be a perfect gift. It has a nice rich flavour, that is not too spicy, so it doesn't burn that much. Overall a yes from me.
First of all, the bottle stands out from the crowd - anyone receiving this as a gift will be impressed on first look. Taste-wise, I enjoyed it neat over ice, but found it didn’t stand out as much as the look of the bottle. Wouldn’t object to having it again, but wouldn’t go out of my way to buy it.
The nose gives off a woody oak and butterscotch, It’s got a very spicy, charred wood taste that lingers, I prefer it neat.
Nice bourbon. Loved the bottle and then liked the bourbon too.
The first time I tried this I wasn’t really impressed. I found it a little harsh on my palate. Second time I warmed the glass in my hands and it was smoother. Nice golden colour which had mellowed and was much smoother on my palate with a nice taste. Mixed well to make a long pleasant drink which is how I’ll drink it. I don’t think I’ll try again despite the dipped wax bottle as when mixed could be any decent whisky or should I say bourbon. It’s all whisky to me.
