A brilliantly flavoursome Swedish single malt whisky from the marvellous Mackmyra, dubbed Stjärnrök! It's a smoky, yet also sherried expression (imparted by Oloroso sherry casks, specifically), making for a complex and satisfying flavour profile. There's also a helping of whisky drawn from casks that previously held cloudberry wine, bringing yet more distinctive awesomeness to the table. You can always count on Mackmyra to create something unique and fascinating, and that's exactly what it's done here.
Redcurrant jam, toasted bread, orange peel, a hint of baked earth.
Sandalwood, more red berry sweetness, quite chocolatey at points, a spicy kick of ginger developing along the way, with hints of peat too.
Lasting sweet smoke on the finish.
This is the first taste of a Mackmyra. Similar to an Islay, whisky, peated and smoky. definitely try another.
Loki the Westie says . I'm awesome. My Captive says so. Also awesome are the whiskies from Mackmyra in Sweden. My Captive really likes their stuffs...and this is another new one. It's called Stjarnrok, which means Star Smoke. That's a name and a half. Doesn't it just invite you to want to drink? It's made of peated malt matured in Oloroso Sherry casks, and unpeated malt matured in bourbon casks. Its then been blended in American Oak casks and finished in Swedish Cloudberry wine casks..the barley for the malt was smoked in peat and juniper wood. Righto, onto the nose. Quite a lot of pepper at the top, as well as the sort of smoky scent you get lingering over last nights ash from a bonfire, as well as fresh apple. The Palate? Well, My Captive is making very happy noises right now (Hey! Loki! This is NOT some dodgy Fifty Shades thing, take more care with your words, ffs)....don't you use that tone with me, you Two Legged Treat Dispenser...Anyway, the Palate is very nice, from his reaction. Certainly a subtle smoke all the way through it, it's quite fruity with orange and berries but there's also dark dark orange chocolate and oakish undertones, the pepper comes back in the finish, a hint of cinnamon and the smoke lingers gently. Once again, Mackmyra have made a PHENOMENAL dram... Now, I hear the Pup Signal calling....somewhere there is a lamppost that needs peed on. Up Up And Away!!!!
Great drop of whiskey a perfect balance of sweetness and peat.... notes of fudge, dried fruit with a little spicy peppery finish but smooth I will definitely be purchasing another bottle
A beautiful and interesting bottle. A sweet fudginess underlies fruits and a soft smokey waft as if standing in a fairground with a half-eaten candied apple in one hand while waiting for a bag of freshly roasted chestnuts. Earthy and sweet, very smooth and moreish, a perfect autumnal dram.
