Lot 40 Rye is a legendary Canadian rye whisky that is produced in a single copper pot still. At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. Luckily, this delicious drop has been relaunched - so fill your boots!
Earthy rye kicks in right away, backed up by caramel, fig and flamed orange peel.
Softly floral as it opens, leading into cardamom pod and peppery coriander. Crunchy brown sugar and fresh vanilla pod sweetness.
Classic rye spiciness lingers.
Far too much heat for my palate, frankly, but if you can get past it there is lovely pomme-fruit, christmas-spice, vanilla and pumpernickel character throughout. The grain's impact is definitely present all the way through. I would describe the grain intensity as similar to Irish Whisky - there, but lighter and less oily than a Scottish spirit. Let the glass breath for a bit and some of the harshness dissipates. Would really like to see this style just done in basic pots and aged for even longer.
One of the finest Canadian Ryes I've come across. Very punchy, sweet then tangy. Complex mix of sweet and spice. 43% ABV is also welcome as it carries a lot more flavour. MasterofMalt notes are bang on.
