    Lot 40 Rye Whisky

Lot 40 Rye is a legendary Canadian rye whisky that is produced in a single copper pot still. At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. Luckily, this delicious drop has been relaunched - so fill your boots!

Tasting Note by The Chaps at Master of Malt

    Nose

Earthy rye kicks in right away, backed up by caramel, fig and flamed orange peel.

    Palate

Softly floral as it opens, leading into cardamom pod and peppery coriander. Crunchy brown sugar and fresh vanilla pod sweetness.

    Finish

    Classic rye spiciness lingers.

    A perfect rye

Everything a Canadian rye SHOULD be. Strong and hearty yet hints of sweetness, just like the people of the country it is made in.

    100% Canadian Rye, absolute belter.

Very enjoyable whisky, definitely my go to North American. For those unfamiliar with 100% rye, it has a big spicy flavor that stays with you for quite some time. Amazing value for money.

Use as a mix only, no complexity, no identity, disappointed.

Just bought a bottle at the LCBO. I’m disappointed, it has no complexity, no identity and is only good for mixing. Won’t buy it again.

Better than Dickel Rye and Rittenhouse (and I like those)

Unmistakably RYE and full bodied. Definitely pumpernickel and european rye bread aroma/flavor to it. Red apple (and apple seeds). I have 2 bottles of this. The "current" green label one that says "made with pot still rye" - that's the one I'm reviewing. And a yellow label (without 2012 on it) that says "made with malted rye" - I haven't tried it yet. From what I gather this is AFTER the 2012 edition but before the switch to 100% unmalted rye. I wonder how collectible these are :)

    Hyper aromatic

This is intense from the off. Low ABV but massive amounts of flavour. Hot nose. I get pine, spice and zest. It packs a huge range of spice. Hard for me to convert to the page. Clove / cardamom / pepper. Some background sweetness. Lots going on. Complex. In two words: hyper aromatic. If this was £60+ people would be waxing lyrical about it. Snap up two plus before gen. pop. cottons on how good this is. It is interesting but not in a novel / forgettable away.
